Well, it looks as if the predictions were correct after all. The commitment came as expected, just a little later than most had first thought. That decision came when UK recruit Stacey Poole announced he would take his game to UK to play for new head coach John Calipari.
Poole’s talents are limitless as a shooting guard/small forward. He’s tremendous at attacking the basket and loves to play on the wing. He’s extremely aggressive and seems to possess a great attitude, while keeping a competitive edge to his game. Calipari will have to work with Poole on his outside shooting and midrange game. His willingness to be a scorer is no doubt his favorite things to do, but he will have to learn how to be a team player first. I expect Poole to be a three to four year guy for Calipari, so Cats fans could see quite an improvement to Poole’s game over the years.
That’s one down and two more to go. Calipari now has two scholarships left for certain and will go after any recruit who he thinks fits his style of play. Just realize that he didn’t stop recruiting John Wall after he received the Eric Bledsoe commitment. He kept pursuing and going after the best talent the nation had to offer. This is the case for the 2010 class and every class afterwards for that matter. If Doron Lamb is available and will listen, Calipari will pitch it. Tobias Harris, C.J. Leslie and Adreian Payne are all vying for playing time at the same position, but if Calipari can get two of them to sign there’s no way anyone would turn it down. Calipari did sign both DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton, two big men expected to fight for time at the same position. Orton opted to stay, Cousins opted to sign. That situation is no different for the 2010 class either.
If everything goes to plan, Calipari will do everything possible to get #1 player Brandon Knight to sign as quickly as possible. Knight plans on visiting several other colleges, but coach Cal has to hope last weekend’s visit sealed the deal. Not to mention Calipari’s knack for signing the top guard prospect in the past four recruiting classes (Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall, Brandon Knight). He’s put two of them into the NBA and one is expected to be the #1 pick for the 2010 NBA Draft. The last could follow all three if he were to sign with the Cats.
A lot more will be known in the next month or two as recruits attend Big Blue Madness and feel the environment of the new UK basketball program. Madness should be the best start of the year and recruits could end up signing in hoards thereafter. Will be plenty of news in the coming weeks.
