Promoter Gary Shaw has delivered big fights during his career and is certainly regarded as a top 10 - maybe top five promoter in the world. Does Lennox Lewis vs. Mike Tyson ring a bell?
But if he ever considers a career change, he should consider being the American tax payer's designated man in charge of keeping an eye on the ten and even hundreds of billions of dollars of current and future tax revenue to keep all those Wall Street bonuses flowing and private jets fueled up to go to private luxury resorts, polo and golf tournaments.
Maybe even a boxing weekend junket to Las Vegas for Pacquiao vs. Cotto.
Here's my beef: Shaw promotes Rafael Marquez and is angling for him to have a fourth fight with Golden Boy - promoted Israel Vazquez.
Marquez wants to flee Shaw, saying the contract has expired.
Shaw believes his deal with Marquez is solid and in good faith has already been negotiating on Marquez's behalf.
Shaw believes he already has been promised as much money that could be guaranteed from the money guys: Showtime Network, Staples Arena and international TV. If the fight doesn't get made by him and soon, all the deals will be off of the table.
Shaw is sure that Golden Boy (Vazquez) wouldn't go on with the show without him
anyway per professional courtesy.
Here's the deal and why you have to love Shaw professionally:
Shaw is willing to be bought out by Marquez and just walk away. But Shaw says it must be based upon the three previous great fights he has delivered in the Vazquez - Marquez WBC Super Bantamweight trilogy and its current brand value, which he says he created.
However, when it comes to paying the fighters for a fourth fight, Shaw squirms differently. Shaw says Vazquez basically blew it by taking a tuneup after 17 months off and not looking very good against a nobody. Vazquez (not even Shaw's fighter) should be happy to get anything he could get at this point Shaw believes.
You obviously see the difference is Shaw's position. He wants to be paid on the highest possible value that can be imagined. But the fighters deserve, not based on their efforts during their trilogy, but on the most current tuneup fight and the low end of the pay spectrum.
You have to love Gary Shaw.
