Things are looking relatively calm in Georgia compared to the political chaos encapsulating South Carolina right now. Gov. Mark Sanford had a rough June - first he was missing, later claimed to be hiking, then the media discovered his Argentine mistress, and now, finally, South Carolina politicians are calling for his resignation. And all this about a man who had been discussed in certain political circles as a candidate for president in 2012.

The State newspaper reports that 12 of the 27 members of the Senate Majority Caucus are calling for Sanford to step down. U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint has also urged the governor to resign, telling him to make “the right decision.”

Since the story broke of Sanford’s affair (which he now says is actually ‘affairs’), many in the South Carolina Senate and House had remained silent on whether they would attempt to remove Sanford from office, but now it seems that most are coming out in full force against him, Democrats and Republicans alike.

As a strong supporter of Sanford, Sen. Kevin Bryant, R-Anderson, said, “It’s time for him to resign. We’ve heard from some people in recent days who separate the bedroom from the board room. I don’t. I look at the whole character of a person, the decisions they make and their dealings with their families.” With even his allies now turning against him, it now seems only a matter of time before Sanford steps down.
