Erik Cardona was blindsided on "Survivor: Samoa."
CBS

For Erik Cardona on "Survivor: Samoa," "Galu was the most important thing out there." Unfortunately, it is quite possibly for that reason that he is sitting on the jury while 11 others are still playing the game for the $1 million prize. He was too trusting of his tribemates and maybe just a tad bit too intimidating both physically and strategically; as Erik himself put it, he was "an obvious target."

Going into the game, the 28-year old California bartender seemed to know right away that he was going to be a force to be reckoned with. Some may have interpreted his constantly aggressive attitude as arrogant, but Erik said that didn't necessarily mean that he thought he was going to win everything: "the cockiness was intentional...I didn't want to lose momentum. We were barely winning challenges [on Galu], so I made sure to check myself every day." Galu certainly didn't lose momentum, as they won almost every challenge going into the merge. Really there wasn't even anyone who intimidated Erik, though he did give props to Mike Borassi for "getting in there" during the early brawl challenge that saw the 62-year old chef leave the game due to injury. (In other words, Mike was right when he predicted that some of his fellow tribe mates would be impressed by his performance.)

Erik didn't have so many kind words for "villain" Russell Hantz, who he frequently referred to in the interview as the "Ty Cobb of 'Survivor.'" As it turns out, he didn't trust Russell from the get-go: "He came up to me and said, 'I'm the strongest guy on my tribe, and you're the strong guy on yours.' I'm like...really? You're comparing yourself to me?'" (As it also turns out, Erik can do a pretty good Russell impression.) Pretty much everyone knew Russell had the hidden immunity idol, mainly since he was practically waving it around on the stick.

When it came to the series of events that led to him being voted out, Erik had quite a bit to say. He wanted there to be an alliance of all four Galu men plus Shambo, but there were problems. "Danger Dave was crazy in every since of the word. He was a powder keg...and he didn't like Shambo." There was then also the ongoing fight between Laura and Shambo, which he referred to as "ridiculous." With all of this is mind, Galu was starting to look ready to murder one another. For Erik this posed one key question: have these people ever watched "Survivor" before? "I didn't want [Foa Foa] to be like Jalapao," he said, referring to the mismatched team in "Survivor: Tocantins" who managed to take out members of Timbira one by one.

In the end, Erik didn't have too many regrets about being blindsided. In terms of the immunity idol in his possession, he stated his reasoning behind not playing it: "it's so difficult to implement, you really have to have some indication you're in trouble." Unfortunately for him, he really didn't have any indication at all. He joked that "by about the 28th time he saw [his] name" written down he knew it was all over. He ultimately admits it was a smart move by Foa Foa: "when my own team went against me, Foa Foa got a break."
