Sesame Street , which can be seen locally in the Saint Louis area on KETC Channel 9, has been around now for 40 years.  With the start of the new season today, November 10, Sesame Street turns 40.  That's right - Big Bird and some of his fuzzy friends have been teaching children their letters and numbers along with some social skills now for 40 years.  You could say it's America's first virtual preschool of sorts.

Most of us cut our teeth on Sesame Street and associate cookies with the big blue furry Cookie Monster, who recently has instead been touting the joys of broccoli and such.  We remember confetti and a laugh coming from The Count when the number of the day popped up.  And, we could count to 10 in Spanish before Dora arrived on the preschool scene.

Sesame Street - Though sometimes interjecting political messages - is overall a wholesome, fun way for children to learn their ABC's and 123's.  While, not intended to be the sole source of learning; for the homeschooling family, Sesame Street can be turned on to educate younger children while older siblings study other more mom-time-needed subjects.

Over the years, many celebrities have appeared on Sesame Street.  Today's celebration even brought out the First Lady to tout its success:
