
With the Feb. 19 trade deadline looming, rumors are running rampant through the NBA.
Some of those rumors involve the Detroit Pistons, and include All-Star caliber players such as Chris Bosh or Amare Stoudemire.
But let's be honest, the chances of Pistons landing a marquee player along the lines of Bosh or Stoudemire is remote. Especially when you consider what other teams are willing to offer.
The best course of action for Joe Dumars would be to shore up the Pistons two most glaring weaknesses this season - defense and depth.
When the Pistons marched their way to a NBA Championship in 2004, they were the best defensive team in the league. Anchored by Ben Wallace, opponents were held to 84.3 points per game.
The bench was nearly as solid as the Pistons vaunted D. Coming off the pine was a mix of proven vetrans and young up-and-comers, including Corliss Williamson, Mehmet Okur, Mike James, Lindsay Hunter and Chucky Atkins.
Dumars should use the 2003-04 championship season as a template for any moves he makes prior to the trading deadline. Instead of trading for a superstar, or creating more cap space, he should try to strengthen his team's defense and depth.
