Tonight’s Academy Awards ceremony and this current entry being my 100th got me thinking about the best TV on DVD sets that were released in 2008. The fact that this was a last-minute thought precluded allowing voting, but I would love to open it up to audience participation for next year. I will also try to come up with categories at Emmy time next fall.

I chose the name “The Winstons” for this award in honor of my late cat, who passed away recently. In addition to his minor celebrity status based on a photo of him in this entry being on the cover of the new edition of “The New Natural Cat” by Anitra Frazier and being displayed in a chain of veterinarian clinics and on an upcoming line of pet food, he was a big TV on DVD fan. He always came running when I turned on the television and would watch the program.

The entries are quite short in the interest of not running on as award shows tend to do. The links are to my reviews of these programs.

Best animated series – “The Real Ghostbusters: The Complete Collection” This is a very clever cartoon with some big names providing voices and the packing is truly great.

Best comedy DVD – “Futurama: Bender’s Game” All of the direct-to-DVD Futurama movies are great both for giving us “meatbags” new “Futurama” stories years after Fox canceled the series prematurely and for offering the same witty writing and subtle pop culture and science references that scifi geeks love so much. “Bender’s Game” simply had the best elements of story, references, and flow of the three that were released in 2008.

Best Scifi DVD – “Star Trek: The Original Series” complete DVD series set. Although I stick by my criticism that the complete series set did not add any new content to the individual releases of the series, the producers did an excellent overall job cleaning up the prints of the show and enhancing some of the effects; further, the DVD sets of each season were already packed with exceptional extras.

Best Drama DVD – “Jericho: The Complete Series” This one will not surprise regular readers. The issues that the show raises have prompted me to write more than 10 entries, the most recent of which have been for Jericho-kansas.com. Further, the special features are exceptional and show that the stars love the rangers and support our efforts.

Best overall DVD (tie) – “Get Smart: The Complete Series” and the deluxe edition of “Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition” (MST 3K) These sets also have clever packaging and a large amount of exceptional special features. They gets the top honor for a combination of these elements and because it combine these with very clever shows that hit the trifecta of excellent writing, superb direction, and wonderful acting.
