West & Gordon, not a law firm

A good excuse to revisit the DVD set of the complete "Wild Wild West" series, which is about two secret service agents in the 1870s, is one reason that I was looking forward to the inauguration of President Obama. Although Jim West and Artemus Gordon did not spend much of the first season of this exciting and amusing show protecting President Grant, they used their training and gadgets that were very advanced for the 19th century to thwart the latest threat to homeland security.

As my first entry regarding this show mentioned, I am not a big fan of westerns and liked the fact that this show was not nearly as "westerny" as I had thought despite playing up this theme more as the season progressed. I also liked the modern sense of this 1960s show.

I was pleased particularly to see a wrongly accused Indian tribe be the hero of one episode and an educated Indian make some funny sarcastic jokes in another episode about how the federal government treated his people.

I was surprised too to see another episode center around a group of supremacists who used a very Nazi-like salute and plotted to impose a 1,000-year reich on the United States. Treating the character of archnemisis Dr. Loveless with a little more respect in later episodes was nice as well.

Again, I encourage readers who think that the show is a traditional western to give it a try.

I would love to hear your thoughts regarding this show as additions to this entry or as e-mail to tvdvdguy@gmail.com.
