
A test by Popular Mechanics has convincingly debunked the gas guzzling myth that surrounds the Corvette.
The Corvette has an EPA highway mileage rating of 26 mpg.
But 'Vette owners know this to be on the low side.
Popular Mechanics got behind the wheel fo a C6 to test Corvette's
"most amazing talent...its astonishing fuel economy".
The drivers for Popular Mechanics drve a Corvette C6 with standard transmission 140 miles along US Route 101. The Corvette got an astounding 32 mpg.
The driving was not your normal Corvette driving. On the freeway they loped along at a slow 55 mph, 10 mph below the speed limit using cruise control, windows up, a/c off and vents open.
The secret? The top gear - sixth - amounts to an overdrive that allows the speed be maintained with hardly more than idle RPM's
Boring driving? To be sure, the Popular Mechanics admitted as such. But they also said about the Corvette...
“parsimonious performance likely can't be duplicated by any other car with anywhere near the performance.”
