Fox has made it very clear that The Sarah Connor Chronicles won't be back. The show's creator has vented on his blog about how it's over and done. But like the Terminators they're representing, the fans refuse to lay down and die.
This time, the Save the Sarah Connor Chronicles coalition wants to rent a mobile billboard to drive around Los Angeles for a mere $3500. Incredibly, loyal fans have been donating the cash and if you can believe their PayPal widget, they've already raised over $2500 dollars.
Wait. What? People are actually turning over money to some anonymous entity on the Internet in hopes of getting a mobile billboard that will likely have no effect at all? Do you know what your local school could do with $2500 dollars? A food bank? A homeless shelter?
I get that people have a right to spend money on whatever they want but is this really the best way for the fandom to show their power? Remember the Moonlight blood drive? Now that was brilliant. It helped the community, it was great PR, news outlets wanted to cover the event -- but a mobile billboard?
Blogger Nick C goes one step further. He says (in a very convincing blog post) that this whole effort is a scam. That the money raised will go into the pockets of the webmaster whether the total is raised or not. He points to a similar instance in the Moonlight fandom which no one seems to be denying.
Giving the Save Sarah Connor people the benefit of the doubt, what are they going to do if they don't reach their goal? Return every $5 donation to the person who sent it? Not likely. Though, looking at that donations widget, it's probably a moot point.
Let's get real, Sarah Connor fans. If you must raise money, put it to good use. Invest in science programs for schools - that would be an excellent way to tie the scifi series into something meaningful that could very well impact the future of the world, for real.
