As far as I know, there is only one band on the planet that can literally describe their sound as part jazz, ska, gospel, funk, punk rock and reggae. California band Fishbone has been all this and more for almost thirty years and show no signs of slowing down.
The current lineup features members on your basic instruments in addition to saxophone, flugelhorn, theremin, and trombone, making their live show, which comes to the State Theatre on Sunday, November 30, one that should never be missed.
Fishbone formed in 1979 in South Central, Los Angeles out of the same scene that birthed the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, and the Minutemen. With the release of their self-titled EP in 1985, they became the darlings of college radio stations around the country. They eventually signed with Columbia Records and the two records that followed, Truth and Soul and The Reality of My Surroundings are considered alternative classics.
But their inability to crank out any radio hits saw them dropped from the label. Since their reputation had been built on their live show anyway, the forced move was not as devastating as it would have been for other bands.
Instead Fishbone went back on the road and have not let up. Only two members, Angelo Moore and John Norwood Fisher, exist from the original lineup, but this has only expanded the band’s already eclectic sound. And their live shows are as kinetic, passionate, and amazing as ever.
Fishbone are at the State Theatre in Falls Church on Sunday, November 30 and at the Recher Theater in Towson, MD on December 3
