In the Sammy vs Sammy contest that took place today at the Rotterdam Half Marathon, Sammy emerged victorious. Sammy Kitwara of Kenya set a personal best and captured the overall title with a time of 58:58, the fourth fastest half marathon ever and the only the sixth to go below the 59 minute mark.
With The Hague’s City-Pier-City Half Marathon under his belt from earlier this year, where he beat former record holder Haile Gabrselassie, today’s race marks the second major half marathon victory in The Netherlands for Kitwara in 2009. Kitwara and his fellow countrymen dominated, with the top-10 finishers hailing from Kenya, and the top six clocking personal bests.
Sammy Wanjiru, who placed 10th in today’s race, still holds the male record with a time of 58:33 set in The Hague in 2007.
While no records were set in the ladies competition, Merel de Knegt lead an all Dutch podium with a time of 1:14:31.
