Mike Tyson's 4-year-old daughter, Exodus, died early Tuesday morning after accidentally strangling herself with a cord on the family's treadmill machine a day earlier.
Phoenix police spokesman Andy Hill said that investigators believe she was playing on the treadmill but that it was not running at the time of the incident. Hill told Larry King in an interview that it appears to be "nothing except a horrible tragedy."
Larry Stone, founder of Safety Matters, a company that provides home childproofing, says that over 1000 children die annually in strangulation-related accidents. The vast majority of the victims are under 4 years old.
While treadmill accidents are common, and care should be exercised around home fitness equipment, Stone says that he has never heard of a strangulation accident involving a treadmill.
"All injuries are preventable. There are ways to babyproof your home," Stone said. "I think that largely it is a matter of taking care of the more straightforward things ... making sure there are no cords from the windows hanging and certainly keeping the child in view."
