The Washington Post reports that the U.S. Senate approved, as expected, federal funding for Metro. WMATA has been flailing under the burden of a budget crisis.
Virginia Rep. Tom Davis has been working on the bill for two years. The bill is “part of a major rail safety reform package with billions of dollars for Amtrak,” The Washington Post reports. Safety was also a focus of the bill. Virginia, Maryland and D.C. will be required to fund the system $50 million for ten years; the bill will help provide $1.5 billion over ten years.
The bill passed 74-to-24. Arizona Senator and Republican Presidential nominee John McCain opposed the bill; Illinois Senator and Democratic nominee Barack Obama supported it.
There will be obstacles before Congress can provide money, not the least to say that states may struggle to provide the funds, but it’s a relief to know the bill passed, right?
