He didn't need the impressive one-sided victory last Friday night at the Mandalay Bay's House of Blues to prove that he is one of the finest fighters from the Philippines. Z Gorres is definitely one of the most techinally sound practitioners of the sweet science coming from the archipelago, but the biggest fight of his life may not even be inside the ring.
After his victory last Friday, his triumphant moment quickly took a surreal turn when he passed out after the decison was handed to his favor. Gorres was knocked down in the 10th and final round of that bout, but was able to recover and secure a unanimous decision win. Just a few moments later, Gorres complained that his legs were weak and suddenly collapsed in his corner. He has been admitted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas and has been there since. According to the LA Times, Gorres underwent surgery to relieve severe swelling to the left side of his head. Initial reports said doctors intended to keep the boxer in a medically induced coma for a few days, but Kizer indicated Gorres has responded to treatment much better than anticipated.
The latest official statement sent by ALA Promotions' president Antonio Aldeguer to the media showed further signs that Gorres may very well be winning his biggest battle yet.
As of 8pm, Nov 16, Vegas time. He is able to follow commands. He opened his eyes on his own a few times. He is able to move both of his legs on command. He moves his left arm on painful stimuli, His neck collar has been taken off since he has been cleared from neck injuries. We trust that the Lord will grant full recovery. Please continue your prayers.
Boxing fans and fighters especially from the Philippines have been rallying behind Gorres since the incident. From Manny Pacquiao to Gerry Penalosa and Nonito Donaire Jr. who went to the hospital immediately to check on Gorres, all the way down to fight fans from across the globe, an outpour of well-wishes and prayers were sent for Gorres, a family man and father of four, in hopes that he may recover soon. Based on his impeccable will and determination in the ring, all signs point that Gorres' greatest victory is well within reach.
Writer's Note: Please keep on praying for Gorres. My heart goes out to his family and friends together with the whole boxing community.
