'Tis the season for family-friendly movies
Take a break from all of the holiday shopping, cooking and baking, grab the kids and head to the movie theater. Here is a list of the latest family-friendly films that are either currently in theaters or will be released during the holiday season.
Movies currently in theaters
The number one movie in the country right now is Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. If you missed the first Madagascar movie about a group of pampered zoo animals who get mistakenly shipped out into the wild, definitely run out and rent it. The sequel lands the group in Africa where they will encounter species of their kind for the first time. In addition to the original stars in the original (Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer); Sherri Shepherd and Alec Baldwin join the cast for an unforgettable movie experience. This film is rated PG for some mild crude humor.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua, starring Drew Barrymore, Piper Perabo, Andy Garcia and George Lopez has been out since early October however it is still currently in theaters. This is the story of Chloe, a pampered pooch from Beverly Hills who gets separated from her owner on a trip to Mexico. She then must rely on the kindness of strangers including another Chihuahua Papi and a German Shepherd Delgado to find her way home. This movie is rated PG for some mild thematic events.
City of Ember is a children’s fantasy of two kids who attempt to solve an ancient mystery and prevent an ancient city from being swallowed up. They face many adversities like broken down equipment and a lack of supplies all while avoiding a corrupt mayor played by Bill Murray. City of Ember is rated PG for mild peril and some thematic elements.
Movies coming to theaters soon
Bolt will be in theaters on November 21, 2008. This movie stars John Travolta and Miley Cyrus and is about a dog named Bolt who mistakenly gets shipped to New York. His “superpowers” are tested by the many challenges he faces trying to get back to his beloved owner. Bolt is rated PG for some mild action and peril.
Delgo arrives in theaters December 12, 2008. This is the story of a Delgo, played by Freddie Prince Jr. who is an adventurous teenager who must get his misfit friends to help him protect their world from conflict. This all-star cast includes Jennifer Love Hewitt, Anne Bancroft, Chris Katan, Val Kilmer, Michael Clark Duncan, Kelly Ripa and Burt Reynolds and many other talented veterans. Delgo is rated PG for sequences of fantasy action violence.
Don’t feel like facing the crowded theaters, curl up on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn and one of these family-friendly Christmas DVDs.
Christmas Snow is the story of a cranky landlord anxious to evict his tenants to make room for a laundromat. On Christmas Eve he gets lost in a snowstorm and his tenants set out to rescue him and show him the true meaning of Christmas.
Miracle on 34th Street is a classic that was remade in 1994. The story has been a favorite for many years. Regardless of which version you choose, the entire family will enjoy this heart-warming tale.
Home Alone has been a family favorite since 1990. This story features a young boy who accidentally gets left behind as his family rushes off to the airport to catch their flight to France for a Christmas vacation. The child protects his home from two clumsy burglars who have robbed every other house in his neighborhood.
In the movie Elf, Buddy (Will Ferrell) leaves the North Pole where he grew up with Santa and the elves and heads to New York City. Among his many adventures, he finds his father (James Caan). This movie not only has the heart-warming factor that all Christmas movies possess, it is also hilarious.
The Classics
White Christmas features classic songs from Irving Berlin as two entertainers (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) with the help of a pair of sisters (Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen) set out to save their former General’s Vermont ski lodge from closing.
A Christmas Carol brings the Charles Dickens story of Ebenezer Scrooge to life. Scrooge is visited by three ghosts and in the process learns the true meaning of Christmas.
George Bailey is focused on all of the negative problems around him but gets a lesson from his guardian angel Clarence about his lifetime of good deeds in It’s a Wonderful Life. Featuring James Stewart and Donna Reed, this movie has been a classic since 1947.
