Blue Jays release Ryan; could he fly to Baltimore?
The Toronto Blue Jays have
released struggling left-handed reliever B.J. Ryan, which begs the question whether the Baltimore Orioles might be interested in picking him up.
Ryan has struggled to stay healthy and effective with the Blue Jays ever since undergoing Tommy John surgery, but he would be a logical claim for the Orioles.
He has pitched in Baltimore before, so he would be comfortable in his surroundings. More than that, he is a guy who could be used out of the bullpen as a left-handed specialist, something the team doesn't have at the moment.
While his ERA is above 6.00 this year, I think it's a terrific gamble to pick him up and see what he can do. If nothing else, I think he should be very effective when matched up against left-handed hitters.
Here's hoping Andy MacPhail goes and gets Ryan and gives him a chance to rebound from a couple injury-plagued seasons.
