Shams Ensemble: voices of freedom from Iran. San Francisco one night only, Sunday, September 27.

The Shams Ensemble – Voices of Freedom Iranian Band Plays SF, 7:00pm at Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA.

Unique in Iran, women musicians are playing and singing.

With Iranian President Ahmadinejad in New York City, instead of protests, San Francisco is hosting the band that created the anthem for Iran’s Green Revolution supporters and activists, “A Cry for Change.” This is their first overseas performance since the current uprising in Iran.

Established in 1977, by Keikhosro Pournazeri, they made it possible for women to perform on stage through special musical arrangements.

He explains: "A woman should not sing solo [in Iran]. So we had to mix their voice with men's voices. That's how we took advantage of that possibility and brought women into the stage."

"In this world, it is full of war and problems. Using the language of music and love - which is Rumi's poems [famed 13th Century poet and mystic]- we're hoping to introduce or give to the world the word of music and word of love - through our music. And hope to make a difference."

Inspired by traditional Kurdish, Sufi and classical Iranian music, the ensemble incorporates the poems of Rumi while they play the tanbur, an ancient three stringed Kurdish lute; the daf, a framed drum; as well as Brazilian musical instruments.

The Shams Ensemble has performed to sold out audiences all over the world.
