Murphy is a contemporary Pagan practitioner-scholar (with a Ph.D.). She is a cultural anthropologist specializing in religions and American religious cultures, and has been a practicing Pagan for more than 13 years. Her dissertation (soon to become a book), Paganistan, is about the history and formation of the Pagan community in the Twin Cities, and she has several academic publication credits on contemporary Paganism.
