The 2009 American Music Awards kicked off tonight shelling out memorable performances that were hits and misses.
Among the R&B/Hip Hop performers on the performance bill were Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys,Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston, and Rihanna to name a few.
Janet Jackson opened up the show with an 8-minute melody, performing her new song “Make Me” as well as a collection of other songs such as “If”, “Nasty”, and “Control” to name a few.
Jay-Z and Alicia paid homage to the state of New York with Alicia Keys opening up their performance with Frank Sinatra’s classic “New York, New York” before heading into their chart-topping single “Empire State of Mind.”
Alicia Keys also performed solo in her second performance later on in the award show performing her song “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart” equipped with her flying high with her signature piano and her very own Spider Man.
Whitney Houston appeared refreshed and ready to sing as she belted out her single “Didn't Know My Own Strength” while Jennifer Lopez (who made a powerful entrance with the help from famous announcer Michael Buffer) became the butt of all jokes courtesy of her stage fall that took place during her performance.
All in all, the performances at this year’s 2009 American Music Awards were simply spectacular proving that the award show is more than just the underdog of award shows.
