There's a revolution happening in metal: old school death metal bands are coming out of the woodwork. And it's starting in Houston, Texas.

Houston is many things. Like Los Angeles, it's a big flat collection of suburbs interspersed with industrial areas. It's hot, humid and laden with bugs. You drive for hours every week and aren't even sure why. There's tons of great food and beer is cheaper than water. But Houston is also home to a rising insurgent movement of old school death metal and black metal.

Yeah, we all know about the old classics. Dead Horse came from here. DRI started out here. Countless musicians from bands we think of as coming from LA or Florida came from here. It's like all the people who don't drive on the freeways all the time stay home and practice guitar. But now a new generation has arrived and they're making some great music -- and it's happening in Houston first.

Check out this new pantheon of old school underground sound:

  • Bahimiron
Like early Gorgoroth crossed with Possessed.
  • War Master
Old Bolt Thrower done in the style of early Bolt Thrower; simple and gratifying.
  • Imprecation
Like early Slayer crossed over with Morbid Angel and Incantation, but has a ritualistic development all its own.
  • Cosmic Atrophy
Demilich, Timeghoul, early Incantation and fellow Texans Infinite Singularity woven into a smooth sheaf.
  • Blaspherian
First album Incantation meets Havohej and Mortem. Thunderous nerve energy.

For years, the trend was metalcore: mixing punk and rock into music that was random, not majestic like the old school death and black metal. But now, our community is going back to what always delivered, with massive results.
