LOUISVILLE, KY - The driver charged in the death of a bicyclist Saturday pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Monday. Police said he wasn't supposed to be driving to begin with.
Police said Kenneth Yates, 25, of Louisville, was drunk when he hit John Carr, 47, while he was bicycling as part of a triathlon at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. Police said Yates was already facing a previous DUI charge.
Yates is facing 8 charges, including murder, DUI, assaulting a police officer and driving with an expired license. The judge kept Yates bond at $250,000 and assigned him a public defender. The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday August 13th.
Carr was riding in the 14-mile bike segment of the triathlon, when he was struck from behind by a 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Yates, said Alicia Smiley, a Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman. Carr was pronounced dead at the scene. According to LMPD, Yates went home and was brought back to the scene by his mother.
In an interview, Carr's wife Sunni described him as an avid outdoorsman and triathlete.
