In my last article I discussed alternative healing through the power of mind and how we can heal ourselves by changing thoughts and beliefs. I hadn’t thought much about our natural ability to heal others before, until my son brought attention to it just over ten years ago …
It was my partner’s turn to put my son to sleep that night, so I was surprised when I heard, “He wants to see you.”
I left my office and went upstairs where I found my son lying on the bottom bunk, clinging to Buddy, his favorite teddy bear. I sat on the bed beside him. “You wanted to see me?” I asked.
He wasn’t even four-years old, “Mommy?” He looked at me and said, “Would you put your hands on my knees?”
“Why?”
“My knees hurt. Your hands make them feel better!” He grabbed one of my hands and placed it on the back of his knees.
This was an eye opener for me. It kindled a curiosity in alternative healing. At first, I was a bit surprised by how widely accepted unconventional healing was. I hadn’t a clue. I read about Reiki, healing touch, aura healing, spiritual healing and others.
While there are many different methods to heal all using their own rituals, in each method what heals is energy. The source of the energy is the key to its success. Within each of us we have the ability to channel our own energy to a recipient. Without a doubt this can make a person feel better, but it will weaken the healer because they are depleting their own power.
Successful healing is accomplished when the healer opens to the universal energy source, God. In these cases the healer receives universal energy by opening to Spirit, allows the energy to fill their body and channels it through touch, or even by just being in the other person’s presence.
Everyone has the ability to open to universal Source for healing others or themselves. We can explore healing by studying different methods and learn from others’ experiences. Or we can trust that we are all divine, we are all connected to Spirit and have the natural ability to heal through unconditional love.
In the end, successful healing is not accomplished by performing some elaborate ritual, movement, gesture or special words. Successful healing is accomplished by the level of the healer’s unconditional love and connection to Spirit.
