One of the tenets of New Thought is disease originates in the mind, and we can heal ourselves by changing thoughts, views and beliefs. The question I pose today is - why wait for a disease to turn inward?

Mind over Matter

Marie* was diagnosed with a chronic illness when she was at 25-years old. She was prescribed drugs and provided dietary guidelines to control her disease. Then one day a friend asked, “How are you handling being faced with a lifetime of illness?”

That question hit her hard! The idea she had been diagnosed with something that would change the quality of life was hard to swallow. So, she didn’t accept it. She didn’t embrace the disease. She stopped taking the medication. She ignored the diet. She lived as if she was healthy, and with the exception of infrequent bouts of sickness, for 17 years Marie was healthy.

About seven years ago, while Marie was speaking with her doctor, the physician casually mentioned she had tested positive for the disease which had been dormant.  Apparently a biopsy had been taken three years earlier, she tested posiive and was never told.

"And you're telling me this, now?" Marie asked the doctor.

The disease reared its ugly head shortly after this.  Marie became very ill. For the first time in her life she willingly took prescribed drugs, she found some relief and the illness became bearable. For three years she was on medicine, six-to-eight pills per day, and from time-to-time she tried to reduce the dosage but the symptoms always came back.

About four years ago, Marie was attending a lecture by a minister teaching principals of the Science of Mind. The lecturer shared her long battle with an illness and the medication she had taken to control it. Then she told the class she had acknowledged her true essence, she was whole, healthy and perfect and her disease was truly dis-ease. The minister said, "The doctor has taken me off all medication for the disease."

At this point in Marie's life, she had been on medication for three years, and had been unsuccessful discontinuing the drugs. Each time she tried, she became ill. After listening to this minister’s inspiring story, Marie thought, ‘If she can do it, why can’t I?’ In that moment, Marie acknowledged that the disease did not own her, and that she had owned the dis-ease.  She had allowed the biopsy results convince her that there was illness.

‘No more!’ Marie thought.

The morning after she heard the minister’s lecture, Marie set her medication aside, and stopped taking it – cold turkey. For four years she has remained symptom-free and healthy.

Throughout my articles I stress we are spiritual beings living a human existence or having a human experience. I also frequently echo the principle of Oneness; that God is in and through everything and divinity dwells within each of us. Not just the “chosen” ones, but everyone and everything.

So what about illness? If we are divine beings how does disease manifest?

Disease originates in the mind when we are not aligned with Spirit and we don’t identify with truth, which is we’re all spiritual beings. Disease is an experience – it’s not the reality. While this certainly doesn’t take away from pain and discomfort from an illness, the reality is that each of us is whole and perfect because we’re spiritual beings. But when there is a crack, a moment of weakness, one in which we identify as being human rather than spiritual, our mind becomes blemished.

In Marie's case, the blemish was a phone call she had with her doctor when she was told she had tested positive through a biopsy years earlier.

In weak moments we allow imperfections into our mind and create a barrier between ourselves and Spirit. That barrier is duality, the belief that we are separate from God. When we maintain our separateness and nurture it, we don’t honor the indwelling spirit. When we foster separateness we open ourselves to human experiences, like disease.

Isn’t it wonderful that we have the ability to cure disease by changing our personal views and beliefs? By turning inward and identifying with being a spiritual being we can manifest miracles and cure disease.

Why wait for an illness though, to turn inward?

If you have a healing story that you would like to share with me, I’d love to hear it. You can send it to me in privacy at alex@alexmarcoux.com.

Namaste.
