At one time in my life my biggest fear was failing to achieve my purpose in life. Fear can be debilitating, leading to inactivity and stagnation. Today, my biggest fear is not showing up.
I went to a workshop recently and was asked to draw ‘my dream in life’ on a piece of paper. I did so using colorful markers with written words to reflect my purpose in life – because that’s my dream – to live purposefully. Now I’m no artist but as I gazed upon that paper which depicted my purpose and what I have come to believe is my ‘calling,’ everything seemed clear to me.
In the moments that followed I was asked to surrender my paper, and feel what it’d be like to lose my dream. But this was my purpose in life! How could I give up on it? I was horrified at the thought. But I honored the process and in the moments that followed I imagined what it’d be like to live without purpose; to live without acknowledging my essence. I was lost and heartbroken.
We all have a special purpose in life. Before we came into this life we made pacts with our higher self about what we are to accomplish while we’re walking this planet. I have spent years searching for answers to questions like, ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Why am I here?’
This exercise was undoubtedly very powerful. In those moments I learned I don’t want to live without serving. I don’t want to live without trying to fulfill my mission in life. In my exercise, I imagined meeting my higher self at the end of this life, and being shown what I was to do with my life. Only, I hadn’t done it because I had locked away my dream, and never pursued it because I was afraid of failing.
When we try anything there’s always the risk of failure. Fear can cause stagnation in life and an unwillingness to take risks. Today, my biggest fear isn’t failure. My biggest fear is not showing up, not giving it a shot, not trying. While I’d be disappointed if I failed, I would be horrified if I had locked away my dream, and not even tried.
Don’t surrender your dream. Show up in life. Keep trying and say yes.
Namaste!
