George W. Bush

Where's Barney when you need him? He wasn't in Iraq with George W. Bush during a press conference at the Iraqi Prime Minister's office, but I bet he wish he was.

In the middle of speaking, a man stood up from the crowd of journalists and hurled a shoe at Bush, which the president ducked, showing surprisingly quick reflexes. The man reached down for his other shoe, which he also threw at Bush, which was deflected.

The man was wrestled to the ground and later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia Television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Eqypt, reports Bloomberg News.

"This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq," the journalist shouted. The White House website merely described the incident as an "audience interruption".

President Bush recovered quickly from the event, and said:

"Okay, everybody calm down for a minute. First of all thank you for apologizing on behalf of the Iraqi people. It doesn't bother me. And if you want some -- if you want the facts, it's a size 10 shoe that he threw. (Laughter.) Thank you for your concern, do not worry about it. "

Barney, who bit a Reuters reporter in November no doubt wishes he could have gotten a bite at the shoe-throwing journalist.

(I was going to name this article, "If the Shoe Fits," but that wouldn't have been nice, now would it?)
