Her death won't get the coverage that any of the recent deceased celebrities, such as Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and, of course, Michael Jackson, received. But in the '50s and '60s Gale Storm, who died Saturday in a Danville, CA. nursing home, was a household name.
She was best known as Margie Albright, also called "My Little Margie", the wacky young daughter of widow Vern Albright, played by Charles Farrell. The series ran from 1952-55. Margie was a sort of Lucy Ricardo with dark hair.
She schemed, usually behind the back of her dear old widower dad, who couldn't seem to keep Margie from getting into mischief. Her schemes usually involved him and his work at the investment firm of Honeywell & Todd or trying to get a spark going in his love life. The writing may not have been up the standard of "I Love Lucy," but it was a fun series to watch anyway.
She followed this series in 1956 with "The Gale Storm Show"/"Oh Susanna!", where Storm played a wacky (again) cruise director named Susanna Pomeroy. Her partner in crime was silent film star Zasu Pitts. Roy Roberts played Captain Huxley. The show ran until 1960.
Storm's career included films, TV and records. She has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
"My Little Margie" is available in two collections by VCI on DVD. Between the two sets, 24 episodes of the series are featured. If you remember the show, you'll be pleased with the DVDs. The quality is good and the episodes included are funny.
Her later show, "The Gale Storm Show," is not available on DVD.
