''The Soupy Sales Show'' was one of our favorite shows back when we were young. It was goofy, that's for sure. But little did we know that it wasn't just for kids.
Sales passed away Thursday in New York.
The show's best period is warmly recalled in "Soupy Sales: In Living Black & White (B&W)," released by Morada Vision. The black-and-white period was filled with unpredictablity and ad libs that pretty much flew over the heads of us young viewers.
A three-disc set of color episodes from the late '70s was also issued by the same company previously. Both are now listed as out of print on Amazon.com. The color episodes attempted to be more polished, and as a result, were less funny.
Fans will remember two great Soupy moments from the black-and-white years: a skit featuring Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. in which the Chairman of the Board takes a pie in the face; and a notorious outtake that finds Sales opening his door and finding a naked woman and trying to keep from letting on to his young audience.
Soupy also made numerous appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show," including one on Sept. 12, 1965 to sing his novelty hit "Do the Mouse." Among the other guests on the show that night were the Beatles and the appearance is included in a DVD set of the Beatles' "Ed Sullivan Show" performances.
Check out the fun above with Soupy, Pookie and White Fang. Thanks for the memories, Soupy.
