Once upon a time, there was a vast and beautiful land called Azeroth. This world held wonders the like of which had never before been seen. In order to experience these wonders, one must be well-prepared, yet travel lightly, for friendly towns, encampments, and opportunities for rest were few and far between. The various races that inhabited this land trekked for hours, days, weeks, scrimping and saving for the day when they could purchase and train to ride a mount.
Today, you simply level to 20, sell a couple of copper bars, and plunk down your 5g. It seems almost instantaneous.
While the game is definitely getting easier, and more newbie-friendly, it would be hard to categorize these changes as completely bad. Yes, the veteran players did their time in Desolace and Stranglethorn Vale with nothing between their feet and the roads but a few scraps of cloth or leather, but that doesn't necessarily make for a better game.
Additionally, those long-time players are still leveling alts and new characters, and with the upcoming expansion's release of new playable races it is a certainty and a majority of the current players will again re-roll. While the first trip through lush and mysterious Ashenvale Forest is a magical journey, the fourth such trip is being to lose its luster. Questing, which has been the recipient of many efforts to streamline and speed up, is simply more fun when the travel time is kept to a minimum.
To be sure, it is a fabulous time to be a leveling character in World of Warcraft, and if you've been considering giving a different race, class, or even faction a try, there is no time like the present.
