Looking for something cool to do this weekend? How about heading to Park Terrace Regal for the premiere of local screenwriter and filmmaker John Schwert's newest feature film In/Significant Others, a dramatic thriller set in Charlotte?
After showing at 15 international film festivals and bringing home 4 awards, this is the first theatrical release of the film, which will run exclusively in Charlotte on May 14-20. Ticket sales in Charlotte could help the film launch future releases in other major cities.
Against the backdrop of a murder investigation, In/Significant Others explores the nature of manipulation within relationships - whether subtle or overt, intentional or subconscious. Between siblings, spouses, friends, and coworkers, the film's characters deal with issues of jealousy, drug abuse, and infidelity, to name a few.
To Schwert, this first theatrical release holds special meaning since it's in Charlotte, a city he's called home since 1998 and has made home to his company, Fourth Ward Productions, since 2004. The film's cast, crew, and set locations also underscore Schwert's commitment to the Charlotte film industry.
"It is much easier to get films made and to get things done here rather than the typical New York or Los Angeles shoots," says Schwert, "and there is no shortage of good cast and crew talent here either."
The Carolina-infused cast includes Burgess Jenkins (Remember The Titans, One Tree Hill), Andrea Powell (Songcatcher, The Limbo Room), Scott Miles (October Sky), Brian Lafontaine, Mark Scarboro, and Brett Gentile. And with set locations at the WFAE studios and Tic Toc Diner in Uptown, your ticket purchase will be well spent just to play a good game of "spot that Charlotte location."
John Schwert is a Charlotte writer, director, and producer of commercials and films through his company Fourth Ward Productions. His first feature-length film, Among Brothers, was shown at 17 international film festivals, featured in a two-hour Dateline NBC special, and released worldwide on DVD (available at NetFlix).
