Author and editor D. L. Snell keeps a blog called Market Scoops, and if you're having trouble deciding on the next semi-pro market to send your story to, you should bookmark it. Once or twice a month, Snell spotlights a 'zine, following up its vital stats with an in-depth interview with its editor or editors.
The most recent 'zine Market Scoops highlights (August 17) is Ideomancer, an online spec fic quarterly. Snell asks editor Leah Bobet about her favorite authors and what sort of qualities Ideomancer looks for in submissions. Questions go into details of setting, genre, characters, pacing and tone.
The interview before that (August 5) is with Nathan Shumate, editor of Arkham Tales. Before that (July 22), William V. Burns of Often Inspired.
The interviews in Market Scoops are good, informative reads for anyone hoping to break into these hard-to-crack markets. You could do worse than add it to your regular eye-on-the-industry reading list.
