Featured in the only women's bout on the AOF 9 card Angelica Brotherton made her successful mixed martial arts debut against Tiffany Connell at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. Sept.4.
While both fighters entered the cage as accomplished kickboxers Brotherton was clearly focused on a ground battle as she immediately went for a takedown. Once on the ground Connell was able to use Brotherton's strategy to her advantage by locking her into a guillotine choke.
But Brotherton showed a lot of perseverance by not only escaping Connell's choke hold but turning the tables on her with a guillotine submission attempt of her own.
Although Connell showed great improvement in her grappling skills since her loss against Catia Vitoria at AOF 7 last April she was not able to dominate the debuting Brotherton. In fact, Brotherton clearly outscored Connell with repeated takedowns. Connell tried to even the score by taking turns with submission holds and ground and pound.
The action in round two was very much like in round one until Brotherton was able to gain top control and dish out a vicious dose of ground and pound. When Connell tried to protect herself from the onslaught of punches and elbows by pushing Brotherton away her fate was sealed as Brotherton immediately went for an arm bar. This time there was no escape for Connell who was forceed to tap out at 4:59 in round two. Alas, if only she had been able to hold on for another second she would have been saved by the bell.
