'Five Factor' trainer Harley Pasternak's video workout tips for fall and winter

Celebrity trainer and Five Factor fitness book author Harley Pasternak talked with yours truly recently about how to keep your diet and fitness plan going through the always dangerous fall and winter seasons.

Pasternak has a masters of science degree in exercise physiology and nutritional sciences from the University of Toronto, and an honors degree in kinesiology from the University of Western Ontario.

He recently helped Hilary Duff get in shape for her recent wedding and also worked with Weight Watchers success story Jennifer Hudson. His newest book is The 5 Factor World Diet.

You can see the Skype interview at left, but here are his 10 Commandments for a Fall Fitness Routine:

  1. Stay active throughout the day: When you’re too busy to make it to the gym or go for a nice jog outside, do things throughout the day to help make up for it.
  2. Do circuit training: Another way to fit exercise into a busy schedule is to try circuit training. It’s great for keeping your heart rate up and optimizing your time.
  3. Mix up your routine: Variety is the spice of life. Change up your exercises, sets, reps and weight.
  4. Hydrate: Although it’s getting colder outside, and you might not sweat as much, you must continue to hydrate.
  5. Listen to music: Music makes a difference during your workout. Especially when the weather starts getting a bit gloomier. Make a playlist that motivates you and keep it fresh.
  6. Have a partner: Get a workout partner and motivate each other by positive reinforcement.
  7. Graze, don’t gorge while eating: Try eating five small meals a day. Keep some food handy around the office.
  8. Make simple meals: You don’t always have to cook. Sandwiches and salads require assembly only. But remember to make all your sandwiches open-faced to eliminate gorging on bread.
  9. Don’t fill up on food: Stop eating when you’re 70 percent full. Fullness lags behind hunger.
  10. Sleep: Sleep helps the body regulate our metabolism and hormones. A lack of sleep will cancel out any effort you’ve made to keep a great Fall fitness routine
