The U.S. Coast Guard reports that the crew of the USS Sterett saw a fireball streak across the sky at around 5 a.m. Friday morning. Ironically this sighting happened during a time where the marine layer was not present.
Residents from Mexico to Los Angeles reported the sighting. There are no photos of the event at the current time, however there are probably thousands of eyewitnesses.
Early morning rush hour traffic traveling across the area would likely have seen the event. Since it was viewed from Mexico, San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles.
No marine layer was present at the coast, more reports are sure to come in.

Could you briefly explain what the 'marine layer' is? "Ironically this sighting happened during a time where the marine layer was not present." Thanks!
"Marine Layer" is referring to a cloud layer specifically at the location of where the ocean meets the land. The ocean (usually cooler) and the land (usually warmer) creates a cloud or fog about 0-10 miles inland depending of the temperature difference. This usually "burns off" by the heat of the sun as the day progresses and returns at night or through the night it builds so when morning returns, a layer of clouds is present again. If a marine layer is present, i.e. clouds, then the sky cannot be seen. "June Gloom" is the marine layer in action around June but by July, there is enough heat (longer days, different off shore weather patterns, etc.) to remove a marine layer. It is normally "clear" during august and september but this year has been abnormally cool and hence more marine layer effect.
I am a planetary scientist who is following up on this meteor with the hope of recovering any meteorites it may have produced. I've been trying to reach the Coast Guard eyewitnesses you mention in this article, but there doesn't appear to be a USS Sterett on active duty. Could you double-check the name of that vessel?
