Sony has released their sales data for Quarter 1 2010 (April 1 to June 30) and sales are looking up for hardware. When Microsoft released their sales totals a couple weeks back, they revealed that the Xbox 360 was currently at 41.7 million units worldwide. Sony's PS3 is totaled at 38.1 million as of June 30th, so the gap is shrinking.  From April 1st to June 30th, Sony sold 2.4 million PS3s worldwide . They plan to sell 15.0 million units during this fiscal year.

Hardware Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 FY LTD

FY 2006 1.7 1.8 3.5 3.5

FY 2007 0.7 1.3 4.9 2.2 9.1 12.6

FY 2008 1.6 2.4 4.5 1.6 10.1 22.7

FY 2009 1.1 3.2 6.5 2.2 13.0 35.7

FY 2010 2.4 ? ? ? 0.0 38.1

Will the torch be passed by the year's end? The race is getting tight, but with Microsoft's recent introduction of the new Xbox 360 model, sales in North America are strong once again. Things will certainly heat up this holiday.

Don't you think there's a difference between 3 Million units and 3.6 Million units?

Not when it has been portrayed as 4.5 to 5 million in recent world-around news. This news in particular makes it more clear why MS dropped the 360 price even more. Its obvious from the start that all the lead MS had from the get go was only due to a lower price point... PS3 with huge price and really, really bad press and an initial lack of games has still managed to make a huge leap, one more PS3 proce-cut and the HD race is over :)

Almost a year since the announcement of the Slim and the gap went from 9 million to 3 million? That's a very good look for them. The big buzz about the new 360 looks to be subsiding, which is good for Sony, considering 360s are $200 and - if Kinect were to fail and Move succeed - I can definitely see things looking differently by the end of this year.

If they both fail, the PS3 will probably overtake the 360 by sometime next year (as most analysts have predicted anyway).

Think about when the new 360 is already $200 and the PS3 is still $300. How about when Sony drops the price again? I can see that having a big effect, especially if they were to drop the price at Gamescom for a Move bundle (which would seal the deal, but it's a very tough call).

OMG!! Have you been hearing about the Xbox 360 selling like hotcakes lately? Outselling PS3 and Wii? Breaking Slim sales records in UK? Halo Reach releasing in Sept.? Or howabout the arcade Slim coming out next month? No? thats why you think PS3 is gonna overtake Xbox 360 I see. Mark my words!!! Xbox 360 is and will be 2nd place overall, even without Japan. U can take that to the bank.

Such desperation coming from PS3 fanboys, including the author of this bias and wrong article.

The gap isn't "3m" but 5.4mil according to tracked totals, and INCREASING. It's like the 6th week since Xbox 360 S launched and it's still massacring PS3 (and even Wii at the moment)with supply constraints in the UK and US. Instead of comparing tracked PS3 vs Xbox 360 sales, why do fanboys think comparing Sony PR sales vs the tracked Xbox 360 sales will make them feel better? I can't wait to see all the tears, hypocrisy and breakdowns when Microsoft PR mentions 43m consoles sold worldwide: "but, but, it doesn't say that on VGchartz!"

This isn't even counting the slim arcades coming out in August, Reach and the amazing Reach bundle in September, and Kinect, which is dominating Move vastly in pre-order sales and casual buzz (according to GAME, Amazon, Gamestop and Toys R Us).

What's with all the desperation and insecurity with PS3 fanboys lately? I mean, I know you must be scared, but

Doesn't this idiot author realize it's 38m SHIPPED, and not SOLD? Sony's PlayStation 3 is at 36.1 million SOLD.

    Such a bias, skewed article.

The PS3 will overtake the 360 in sales, won't be this year or next i doubt but X box 360 will come last this generation, forget Kinect or Move, think Gran Turismo 5, PS3 will come out on top this holiday season because of it and another ps3 price cut will make up the rest of the sales to overtake the 360.

    @Truth
The only one who sounds desperate and insecure is you and all the other Xbots commenting on this article. As long as a console has many great games (which both the PS3 and XBox do), I don't give a damn how many units more (or less) it sold compared to its competitors.

    LOL@ davari, Truth & Chris

Silly fanboys, you're comparing a site that guesses figures and adjusts them as official numbers come out to official company numbers. Currently (at the end of the latest quarter for both companies) sales are 41.7m VS 38.1m, so no Truth, Microsoft isn't gonna announce +43m sold before the next quarter.

And if you guys are so convinced VGChartz numbers are the real thing, then why were the 360 and PS3 numbers at 40.7 and 35.7 for weeks if not months? Didn't they sell anything in that period? They did but the site admins didn't update because no one but Sony and MS are tracking sales outside of US and Japan. If you want to play the numbers game, wait until quarterly numbers (like now) before you go saying how one console is outselling the other.

Lastly, the 360 slim had an awesome few weeks but I doubt it will continue selling at this rate. PS3 is still selling good but it isn't pulling numbers like it did in September '09.

and there is 40 PlayStation Move games, Little Big Planet 2, SOCOM 4, Killzone 3, in Famous 2, and lots of 3rd party games on the bench.

You have to think about the numbers for Xbox 360 are already messed up.

You had half of those SOLD buying new systems because of RROD, and don't pull the "if you send it in, then you will get it fixed for free" bull. Most of the users that got the RROD just bought a new Xbox.

If you have faulty products that need to be replaced every year, that is sure to boost sales!

360 started with approx 10 million lead, now only 3.6 million lead. PS3 is going to outsell 360.? But so what if it does. Both are good gaming machines. Kinect is not going to get the 360 consoles off the floor due to no support and no games, while PS MOVE will sell consoles due to support and games.

The gar is close to 4 million, I think the PS3 with some luck is able to sell around 30,000 more console per week in average... that means it will over pass the 360 in around 2.5 years. That is if kinect is not huge or the s model doesn't slow down. What I'm saying is that by the time the PS3 is about to pass the 360, lets say 2012, Microsoft will be anouncing the 720 or whatever is called

All lifetime totals of consoles are shipped, it is not a total of sell through data, so the numbers from Microsoft and Sony are legit according to their internal records. The totals are accurate for them since stores have to purchase the consoles from them and then NPD, Gfk, etc, track the sell through data to the consumer. The only numbers that matter to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are what they have sold to stores since it is an indicator of demand, and VGChartz is not an accurate source of information. And who cares about Kinect and Move driving sales, the only two games that matter to driving sales are Reach and GT5 for their respective consoles.

I see a whole lot of ps3's on the shelf and no slim or old models. I can't even get a xbox 360 unless I'm in the store with in 4 hrs of it being put out on the shelf... this is shipped numbers and as I see a whole lot are on the shelf. I also see there are no xbox 360's on shelf... so the Question is what is the sales, cause a unit on the shelf is not a sale.... vgchartz I think is right on target, give or take a 100,000 units at most... so keep trying sony fanboys but it's all bull.
Kinect is going to make you cry or give rise to more article's like these

plus at this point xbox 360 can't keep up with sales demand, ps3 is just sitting there on the shelf collecting dust. go ask your local gamespot, EBgames or walmart. which my sister is the manager at.. xbox is hot wheather you like it or not....

story time is over, xbox won, get over it.

I agree, most likely 1.0 to 2.0 milllion ps3's sitting in the store. As I can see zero xbox 360's, they can't even keep up with demand. SO vghartz is about right on.

this whole article has biased written all over it.

so one million being not sold would be 4.7 million ahead. 2 million being 5.7 million ahead. I think vgchartz has it right on at 5.4 million ahead. good job vgchartz. THis including the sales of the 360s. I think it's safe to say xbox is 5 million ahead with out doubt.

TO LBDz XBox was ahead 8 million units. so ps3 made up about 2.6 million units but that number is decreasing drastically and should be right back where it started.

    hahaha WATCHOUT Xbox fanboy Attack...
Yes Xbox 360 is still dominating in the US and UK but thats it, the console is pretty much screwed up in other parts of the world, except southamerica because it can pirated not like the PS3---the console is actually a luxury over here, kk but leaving that behind, there was a huge increase in sale of Xbox 360, why? the reduced price of other models, and is confirmed that of the total sales only about 35 and 40 percent of the consoles sold was the xbox 360 S. Sales have already confirmed a reduction of 36% of 360's sold and in Japan is back to the last position over the three next gen consoles, and pretty much in other parts of the world, and even if kinect looks promising it wont last long either, Toys R Us forbid the 40% coupon that many ppl was buying the kinect with and the sales wont keep up cuz ppl is gonna get hiralously overwhelmed when they get to know that kinects adapter for older systems is retailing already for about $50 bucks.
