Former CIA Director Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter publicly voiced his concern about UFOs and a major UFO cover-up in the New York Times on February 28, 1960. Hillenkoetter was the first director of the CIA when it was originally created in 1947, serving as its director until 1950.
The highly revealing
Times article interestingly was buried on page 30 of the Sunday edition that winter day 50 years ago. You can easily verify this by going to the
New York Times archives webpage for the article at
this link. Immediately under the title, you will see descriptors for the article: "February 28, 1960, Sunday, Page 30, 418 words."
Also interesting to note is that the title of the article in the archives reads "AIR FORGE ORDER ON 'SAUCERS' CITED." Because of the misspelled word "forge" (should be force), when I first heard about this article several years ago, I was unable to confirm the story. I searched the Times archives using the original title and came up with nothing.
Only later, when I searched again on some of the content in the article, did I eventually find it. I have done hundreds of article searches in the Times archives over the years. Yet this is the only spelling error I've ever come across. Makes you wonder...
The full original article in the
Times archive can be read at link above, though a small fee is required. However, you can read the entire article free on the excellent WantToKnow.info website at
this link. Here are key excerpts of quotes by CIA Director Hillenkoetter from the article:
It is time for the truth to be brought out in open Congressional hearings. Behind the scenes, high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about the UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense. To hide the facts, the Air Force has silenced its personnel.
So the former head of the CIA claims that the U.S. Air Force is silencing its personnel on the topic of UFOs, yet the
Times buries the article on page 30 of the Sunday paper. And then no other major media has ever mentioned this fact since. Nor have they given much coverage to hundreds of other top military and government officials who have publicly talked about a major UFO cover-up. For a powerfully revealing summary of the statements of some of these officials,

For a most fascinating documentary on UFOs which includes videotaped coverage of the testimony of some of these top officials, watch Out of the Blue, which was broadcast on the Sci Fi channel. This gripping documentary has by far the best, most reliable evidence ever seen on the topic. It was one of the most popular programs to ever appear on the Sci Fi Channel. Now you can watch part one (45 minutes) here.

It's amazing to see UFO/conspiracy-enthusiasts recycle the secrecy aspects over and over again - and sell it as shocking-secret-truth news. It's a well known fact, the Robertson regulation, dated 1953 [FOIA doscuments, Robertson Panel] is still in effect, and, there is no sensible reason to overturn this policy. Since ordinary people are far not educated enough to recognize the implications of a premtured disclosure of any extraordinary truth, they should simply accept, there are vital and legitimate reasons for the ongoing secrecy. It's obvious, UFOtainment publishers stepped over their limits, when they started a UFOmania in the last years. Meanwhile this problem has been recognized, and all UFOtainment shows are currently shut down systematically. [November 2008 CNN's UFO-shows, Mai 2009 History Channel's UFOhunter-show, next will be SciFi/Discovery-Channel's MUFON-UFOtainment show, etc.) So in a decade, the topic will be off the public radar - and die it's deserved death.
Hey Shol'va....
What are the vital and legitimate reasons for keeping such things secret?
The only one I can think of would be to protect our "false" economies....why would those with power want to spoil the monopolies that exist today?...
It's much better for them if we all just remain ignorant.....
For those of us with personal experiences, this topic will never die until it is completely revealed and all manner of personal and public abuses done in the name of this kind of secrecy cease.
@Jez and Niara terela:
Here is a whole bunch of legitimate reasons not to disclose ET's (if existed and visited earth)
www.presidentialufo.com/ufo_coverup.htm
Hi Shol'va,
I took a look at the page you recommended. Are you aware that at the end he recommends disclosure sooner than later? He compares it stopping smoking sooner rather than later:
"It is similar to the analogy of smoking. You can either quit smoking when you get the warning or wait until the diagnosis that you have lung cancer. The chances for survival seem to clearly indicate that procrastination is not a viable option when it comes to disclosure."
I invite you to take a look at my summary on all this at wanttoknow.info/meaningoflifebigpicture. The time for disclosure is now. Take care, Fred
P.S. Are you in any way involved in the censorship of my articles on search engines?
@Fred Burks:
Jez asked me about legitimate reasons for UFO-secrecy, I provided a link, where all legitimate and also speculative reasons are meticulously listed. Of coarse, this does not imply the assumption, I shared the opionion of the author. If you had read my earlier posts, you would see, I advocate secrecy until humanity haven't evolved into a type 1 civilisation. As we are far not ready to release nuclear power to be used by the general public, there are even more energetic and mindbogglingly dangerous technologies
(I work on it) we can't tell the people; particularly, since these technologies are not bound to controllable nuclear materials. (Einstein's famous equation E=mc² becomes a complete new meaning of potential devastations). If ET's visited earth, they'd use the very same physical principles. Simply wait a couple of centuries. And political pressure is useless. Meanwhile I'd suggest to have great fun, whenever you saw an object in the sky, people term as UFO.
Hi Shol'va,
Thanks for the link but I think it is all just fear mongering...
I didn't see anything I felt was vital or legitimate....just a desire to keep control of the status quo, which I don't think serves or protects the "people" at all....
I guess I trust people more than I do governments. I'm actually an Australian so I probably do view government very different to an American...I no longer view governments, especially the American government, as positive, good or worth while, I don't believe they serve the people at all anymore and I look forward to the day this system collapses, I think it's coming fast.......so bring on disclosure, there is nothing to fear......
Hi Shol'va,
Thanks for your response. Are you in any way involved in the censorship of my articles on search engines?
With best wishes,
Fred
Most likely the government keeps it a secret because it benefits them somehow. I doubt they are particularly worried about how the people would handle such information. Keeping their knowledge of the UFO phenomenon a secret is probably giving them some kind of advantage over others, sort of like the advantage you'd have over others if you were the only that knew how to make fire.
"Shol'va" means "traitor" in the the Goa'uld language of Stargate, by the way.
There are no reasons to keep it secret any longer. All reasonably intelligent persons regardless of education are capable of understanding and accepting this knowledge. And quite frankly, there may be persons out there among the masses who although outside of the intelligence agencies, the military-industrial complex, the research triangles, and politics have developed more knowledge including scientifically advanced knowledge than those within - knowledge that could be of great benefit to our Nation and to our World. Truth should be revealed and let those who will bury their heads in the sand do so and let those who have something worthy to contribute do so. Secret is not better - Secret just keeps more people uninformed and stupid and hinders the development of more secure growth. Safety in knowledge - more advanced knowledge in numbers.
