Democrat Gazette, UAF fluke marijuana story

Earlier this week, a television station in Fayetteville reported that UAF made changes in its marijuana penalties.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Reporter Jennifer Godwin reported 8 hours later that the University did not issue such a statement.  The university also released an announcement that they had not equalized marijuana and alcohol penalties.

But the large and bureaucratic university apparently wasn't aware that its resident life department had indeed made changes in its handbook regarding marijuana policies.

The school's residential life department admits there had been a "miscommunication" and that the university forcefully denied the statements because it did not want to give the impression that they agree with the idea that marijuana is a less harmful drug than alcohol.

Students for Sensible Drug Policy argue that students who smoke marijuana are not violent like those who use alcohol.  One student on UAF's Facebook page went so far to say that students who smoke marijuana tend to remember who they were smoking with and who they had sex with the night before.

Marijuana possession on campus at UAF is a now misdemeanor, just like alcohol possession is misdemeanor.  But the penalties and fines may be more severe depending on individual circumstances.

The changes to the marijuana possession policy can be found at UAF's residential life handbook at their website.
