Why you won’t see My Chemical Romance on any ‘Twilight’ soundtrack

My Chemical Romance is cited in many of Stephenie Meyer’s book playlists (Twilight’s, Eclipse’s, Breaking Dawn's), but they haven't appeared on any of the Twilight series' film soundtracks yet.

Apparently, this is not for lack of effort on the soundtrack creators' part, though. (In other words, this isn’t a Blue October situation.)

According to Contact Music, My Chemical Romance’s interview with FME Magazine explains why the band has not been a part of the albums.

Though approached for a contribution to the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, “frontman Gerard Way said despite being offered huge sums of money, the group refused because they had ‘moved on’ . . . ‘That's why the song 'Vampire Money' is on our new album, because there's a lot of people chasing that money. 'Twilight?' A lot of people around us were like, 'please, for the love of God, do this movie.' But we'd moved on.’”

So, take what you will from that, but I guess we shouldn’t place any “vampire money” bets on My Chemical Romance being on one of the Breaking Dawn soundtracks . . . Your thoughts?

I'm not too surprised by this.

  • Oh Gerard, you make me love you more every day. Even Paramore doing a song for this series, I felt was a sell-out on their part because they didn't need it. They're doing great on their own. Although getting their music into the ears of Meyer's fans did expose them to more of the demographic that fits them. My Chem? Not! The last thing MCR is going to need at the shows for the tour for Danger Days is more shrieking teenies. Yes, there should be a lot of people between the ages of 14 and 30 at their shows cheering and dancing and moshing and surfing but not the "Oh my god MikeyWay!" screaming 12 years olds.

Thank you Killjoys for not selling out. And November 22nd is not getting here fast enough.

I am not surprised but I really don't understand why people think its selling out to have one of your songs in a movie. MCR obviously don't "need" the exposure because they are awesome and have millions of fans anyway but I think its a shame that we won't be getting an MCR song on what are usually fantastic soundtracks. As for not wanting screaming teenies shouting "OMG Mikey Way" I'm afraid that every MCR gig I have been to (quite a few!) you will always get that (i have been know to scream "OMG Gerard I love you" many times myself - LOL!

I agree with Alice, I LOVE MCR, and I would very much enjoy them singing on the soundtrack,. I see MCR view point but I do not think it would be a "sell out", There are some bands on the soundtrack that i was turned onto BECAUSE of the soundtrack, and that is a good thing. No, MCR doesn't NEED more popularity but it could open new eyes. I will still like them regardless but am a little disappointed that they wont be on the cd.

True artist usually fundamentally love music and feel its a transforming force. To purposely limit the number of lives you affect through your music is selfish to me and makes me wonder if your music is truly a gift to the world. To pick and choose who gets to hear it is almost like censoring. I think denying it to others who could be changed by it is the real sell out.

I don't see it a selling out. All 3 soundtracks have been awesome. And just like Jana have turned me onto some bands & music I haven't heard before. I guess whatever makes them happy.

It's not selfish to not put their music on a cd they don't want. MAR has matured beyond the vampire genre, there's no need to take a step backwards.

That, and they could alienate their fans. I'd loose all respect for them if they did.

The thing is, they are NOT picking and choosing who gets to hear their music. Literally ANYONE in the WORLD can listen to their music; Who is being cut out here? MCR is done with the vampire genre, and in another interview, they said that not one member of the band has even read the books, and it's not something they would be big fans of. Why write a song for/about something they have no passion for? They have also said that they mean no disrespect toward the books or movies, and they understand why people like them. It's just not a good fit for them. It's irritating to me that you would imply that they are not real artists because they didn't want to do Twilight. By your logic, it seems they should do a song for every soundtrack that asks it of them, no matter what. After all, what's the big difference between turning down Twilight fans and, say, turning down fans of some Disney movie? They should spread their music to EVERYONE EVERYWHERE, right? I'm sorry, but that's just silly. MCR has never said that they refused because they don't want Twilight fans to start liking them. It WOULD BE selling out to them, because it's not something that even interests them. It represents something they got past years ago, except Twilight portrays it in a much more shallow, artificial way than MCR did. So the only reason they would do the album, is for all the money. Because everyone knows anything 'vampire' generates mad cash these days. That, my friend, is selling out. I'm proud of MCR.
