The great 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' trailer debate: Bella's engagement ring

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Bella engagement ring
Bella's engagement ring in 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' trailer

Right now, there are a great many conversations and debates being waged about the newest The Twilight Saga: Eclipse trailer, but one that seems to hold particular significance for a lot of fans is the question of whether Bella's engagement ring fits the literary bill. The ring was shown in passing in the first trailer for Eclipse, but it received undeniable and prominent placement in the latest.

Coming off of the reveal, there seems to be a split in the fandom as to whether the ring matches popular perception of Stephenie Meyer's description.

Only trouble is there may not be a common perception at all.

A number of vendors have come out with their own versions of the Bella engagement ring, and the results are quite varied. While there are a couple (here and here, for instance) that look a lot like what we see here in the picture, there are others still that look very different (like this one or this one).

Thus, there doesn't seem to be any achievable market consensus about the way the ring looks.

So, here's how the book describes it:

Nestled into the black satin, Elizabeth Masen’s ring sparkled in the dim light. The face was a long oval, set with slanting rows of glittering round stones. The band was gold — delicate and narrow. The gold made a fragile web around the diamonds.

Comparing the image with the text, it seems that the ring chosen has all of the description's elements. It's certainly nestled in black satin, and there is indeed a long oval face with slanted, web-like settings and round stones. We can't see the entire band, but it looks pretty dainty from what is visible here.

So, in a technical sense, the ring has hit all of the right notes.

Still, any time you conjure up a mental image as important as something like Bella's engagement ring (or Edward's Volvo, or the sparkling effect . . . etc.) from the books, it's difficult to displace that vision for another offered by the film.

It seems that this is just one of those film fragments that will please some but not others. It is one of those situations, though, where you could go to Vegas with the bet that Stephenie Meyer was a key player in the selection decision.

So, would you care to weigh in with your thoughts on the ring? Yeah or nay to it matching the book's description (or how you imagined it)? Comment below and share!

I think they did a great job with it. It's hard to come up with what everyone may be evisioning in their mind. Only thing is that it looks really big in size...I envisioned something a little smaller - I guess this goes to show my point here! Everyone has their own visions of it. So there is no way to make everyone happy!

I am glad they are trying to stay as close to the book as possible.

I think Bella's engagement ring would be a little lower but in this same way, does Elizabeth Masen in 1890 would use something so big?

Sorry doesn't do it for me. I prefer the other two discussed in this article. Not antique looking enough.

I think the ring fits the description, but it is waaaay too big. I also envisioned it to be a little smaller, more delicate.

I wish the ring was a little smaller. I imagined it to be more of a simple ring. And, in the book Bella loved the ring. She doesn't seem like the kind of girl that would like such a huge ring. But, that is just my opinion! I am certainly not going to get bent out of shape about what the ring looks like; I just can't wait to see him propose!

I agree it'll serve its' purpose, but like most others, envisioned it a lot smaller. I can't imaging Elizabeth Masen in the 1800s wearing something that gaudy. However, anything Edward gives Bella she'll absolutely love - so I can see Bella wearing it, especially with the sentimental value attached.

i think if they absolutely made sure to get a ring as was described in the book and had Stephanie consulted about what she had envisioned for the ring then yes. However i always imagined the ring a little smaller, the one in the picture is a bit big and knowing Bella, it's no wonder why she would rather not where such a flashy thing...lol. But it's a beauty still.

Even if it's too big, it looks pretty much as I imagined it in the book.
    Yay, from me.

Hated the books description of the ring so, I was hoping for something alot different to what is described. The ring was always fugly in my imagination so I guess the movie ring is perfect.

I actually have the Infinite Jewelry ring, and it is EXACTLY as I pictured it. It is very delicate and the one from the movie looks huge. Stephenie Meyer DID work with Infinite Jewelry, and I have the certificate of authenticity go with it. The stones are bigger than the onscreen ring, and their are 13 of them. It REALLY is gorgeous, and catches the light brilliantly. Although the ring is described as "gold" which indicates the yellow, I orderd the white, and is is beautiful.

I mean really I don't care about how the ring looks it's just the thought of how they actual kept it in the movie and I fits the book as close as possible and that is what actually matters. I mean it looks like something a man would give his wife-to-be back in Edwards era so and plus I mean like Bella cares anyway because I mean she's not exactly into the latest styles people!!

I don't like it. Way too big and gaudy. I imagined it more delicate- more intricately designed gold with small diamonds around - more like filigree. Not what I imagined at all and it certainly doesn't look like anything that would have been from the "anne of Green Gables" era and certainly wouldn't look right with a wedding dress made in the romantic style of Anne of Green Gables.

  • Debra Miles 1 year ago

It is UGLY! I was picturing a more delicate, intricate gold filligree around the diamond or diamonds. Like estate jewelry, nothing big and gaudy like that!!!!

I have the same ring as Robin (from Infinite Jewelry) and I LOVE it. I will say that the ring on the trailer looks bigger (at least in the box) than the version I have, but I have gotten a lot of compliments on it! I think it matches the book version perfectly!

Is the ring exactly how I might have imagined it while reading the book? No. But does it meet all the standards from the text? Yes. Which means I'm happy. I don't particularly find it very pretty, but then any time I've seen jewelry from older time periods I've always felt kind of like it was big, gaudy and not all that attractive- that's just how some era jewelry was though. I agree with Carrie that it looks like something Edward's mother would have given him, which makes me happy, and I agree with examiner Amanda that Stephanie Meyer probably had a hand in picking it out. And if Stephanie liked it, then hooray, since it's her world being brought to life and really her opinion is the only one that matters. The rest of us are just lucky enough to be along for the ride. And I agree with GetaTwilife- I would also be happy with a piece of gravel if thats what Edward handed me. GetaTwilife, I think cement glue would do the trick very nicely. ;o)

To me, slanted diamonds aren't round. Most of these are round. I don't know... maybe slanted meant slanting off of the side of the dome??? Who knows. I guess in the end it doesn't really matter... it's the sentiment behind the ring that matters.

  • helen 1 year ago

to me it seems pretty accurate. it is gold, it has a fine band (as far as we can see), it is oval, delicately set with slanting rows of round diamonds.... to me that ticks all the boxes that SM describes in her book

of course people are gonna have different ideas on what it 'should' look like but to me it looks pretty spot on! =]

i have the one from infinite jewellery and im sure i remember reading that of all the ones produced for sale the infinite jewellery one was the only one accepted and endorsed by stephenie meyer as the closest to what she had in mind when she wrote the book? it does differ slightly from the one in the movie which is definitely bigger, but im still majorly happy with mine.

Definitely not what I pictured when I read the book. I pictured a large center diamond, cut into an oval shape, with surrounding smaller diamonds on either side, and on the band. If it is going to be a ring in the Cullen family, it has GOT to be more glamorous that the one pictured above!

Sorry, swing and a miss for me!
