Books for 'Twilight' fans to check out while 'Breaking Dawn' is in the works

'The Hunger Games' by Suzanne Collins

Let’s face it. There isn’t as much going on in the Twilight world as there has been for the past few years. Right now, Breaking Dawn is somewhere in pre-production land, and it’ll be a while until we really start to see any news related to that.

So, I’ve been on the hunt (bad pun) for new material that Twilight fans might like, and I have two recommendations so far. It should be mentioned at the outset that I haven’t been looking for vampire stories, necessarily, because I’m of the opinion that most of us didn’t like the Twilight series simply because it had vampires in it.

First of all, I read Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Heidi and Lauren from Twilight Facebook have been absolute champions of this story, so I picked it up and was not disappointed. Set in the south and told from the perspective of a high school boy named Ethan, the book is one which couples that youthful angst with otherworldly circumstances. It’s a story of young, rather innocent first love that faces extreme and mythical circumstances, and it is definitely a page-turner. One of the attractive qualities that stands out with Beautiful Creatures is the first-person narrative style. The authors have done a nice job of bringing forth a thoughtful, refreshing protagonist that has honest intentions and interesting perspectives on his small world. The characters are very compelling, and the plot is nicely composed. It’s definitely a fun, light read, and a sequel to the story, Beautiful Darkness, is expected in October.

Secondly, I’ve been positively devoured by The Hunger Games series (by Suzanne Collins) for the past few days. Kimmy and Nicky from HisGoldenEyes.com also run a fansite for this series called Mockingjay.net. As Nicky suggested, the series (the third of which just came out yesterday, by the way) is incredibly intoxicating and inviting. I found it particularly appropriate for Twilight fans because it is told by a teenage girl who has to overcome a very severe set of circumstances and dangers. It’s difficult to explain the plot of the story in the Hunger Games trilogy without scaring potential readers off, but suffice it to say that it is delicious. In some ways, the main character, Katniss, reminds me of the strong, fierce Bella we almost got to know in Breaking Dawn. I really, truly think this is a great series for fans of the Twilight Saga, and I encourage you to pick it up.

A couple of other suggestions that have come across the table so far have been The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare and the Shiver series by Maggie Stiefvater. I’m going to be checking those out to pass along thoughts to fellow Twilight fans, of course, but I’d love to hear your suggestions as well. Please feel free to post your recommendations in the comments below!

Either Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld Series or her YA series.

However, if you are under the age of 18, or cannot handle sexual themes, do NOT read her adult novels (Women of the Otherworld Series). They are more for the Twi-Moms or older Twilight lovers. Stick to the YA series.

Kelley Armstrong is an amazing author and she captures your attention very quickly. The only reason why I would recommend it is because it's supernatural themed.

Most of the others I've already seen, so i won't mentioned them C:.

The Iron King and The Iron Daughter (the Iron Queen will be published 2011) this is the faery world as you never knew it could be. 'Jessica's guide to dating on the dark side' by Beth Fantaskey was just amazing - & while its all about vampires it certainly made me laugh in places. "Sunshine' by Robin McKinley so much more than vampires. 'Wondrous strange' by Lesley Livingston has descriptions of the faery world that will leave you breathless.

I must say I have to agree on every single book series you put up there. You should REALLY try the Thirst series by Christopher Pike. So good, its more fierce then Twilight but makes it all the better. Get to reading!

    - Evernight by Claudia Gray
    Good storyline and fierce characters

    - House of Night by P.C Cast
Strong protagonists and a lot of girl power mixed with complicated relationships and action.

Some more great series are the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harries. It only took me about three months to read all ten books. Now I'm reading the Harper Connelly series by the same author. You can find out more about this author and her books at www.charlaineharries.com. They are worth checking out.

PC Cast is an amazing author. Check out any and all of her work. She writes a bit of fantasy romance...but it's all really fun to read!

Also, the GONE series is really intriguing: a small "bubble" of southern California coastline where all the adults disappeared one day and as every kid hits 16 years old, they disappear as well. It's like a more modern Lord of the Flies.

In just two days, WHEN BLOOD CALLS by J.K. Beck, hits the shelves! I was lucky enough to win an advanced copy and could not put it down....this is the first in a trilogy, with the second book coming out Sept. 28 and the first on Oct. 26, so I don't even have to wait long in between books! It's gritty and dark and has twists throughout! Most of the story is about Sara Constantine, an attorney whose new job is to prosecute vampires and the like...before knowing this, she spends a night with a handsome (vampire) Luke Dragos, up for murder.....I absolutely love the romantic element without all the "fluff"....I've been reading p/n books for years and years, and gotta say this is one of my most favorites....language is coarse so I wouldn't recommend it for the young adults,...it's strictly a book for us "grown-ups"....

Try the books by Laurel Hamilton. They are for the 18 and over crowd, filled with vampire, ware wolf and other interesting sidelines. The Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series is the best so far and this author has many books to chose from. Available in local libraries.

If you fellow twihards are really in need for a new twifix I heard that from Barnes & Noble that The Twilight Sage: Official Guide comes into stores in the US on 12/31/10 I know its probably not much new information but its something new right to maybe hold us Twihards over just a tab bit until we start hearing some new information about Breaking Dawn

I love Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead almost as much as the Twilight Series! Also, Vampire Kisses Series(7 books), by Ellen Schreiber, and Morganville Vampires Series, by Rachel Caine, are really good as well. The Morganville books aren't very big, but there are a lot, 8 to be exact, and the next one comes out in Oct. I have also read The Mortal Instruments books by Cassandra Clare (City of Bones/City of Ashes/City of Glass) and I absolutely loved them as well. Can't wait to read the Sookie Stackhouse Series, Vampire Diaries, and I'll try out some of the other recommended ones mentioned as well! Thanks for helping me find more stuff to read...hope I could do the same or you.
