The Securian Winter Carnival Race has a new name, a new distance, and a new route for 2011. The "Securian Winter Run" will take place on Saturday January 29th at 9:00 am. The start will be at the same intersection that it has always been at, but now runners will head in a different direction and loop through downtown before running out-and-back along the river.
There's a new race distance this year as well. There has always been a half-marathon distance, and a few years ago, a 5K was added. This year, on top of the 13.1 and 3.1 mile races, there's also a new 10K distance.
The routes do NOT head straight down to the Mississippi River like they've done in the past. Runners first head towards Lowertown, and then head back up Kellogg (adding in another hill). After a small loop around the St. Paul Public Library and Rice Park, runners run back down Kellogg, and then work their way to the Mississippi. Then they are on the "original" course headed out towards 35E and Highway 5. See the slideshow to the left for the 5K, 10K, and half-marathon race courses.
All races are chip timed, and there will be water at miles 3, 6, 8, and 11. There will be pace groups from 1:35 up to 2:30. Click here for registration info for all the races.
