A cool morning for the first Mosquito Man Duathlon

Saturday, September 4th was the 50 degree morning of the first Mosquito Man Duathlon. Gear West Bike and Tri hosted this event, which is the newest in a community of growing multi-sport events. Their goal was to make it as inexpensive as possible, and they succeeded with the race only costing $25 (even with chip timing).

And I guess it's important to mention that this was unlike most duathlons. Your traditional duathlon is run, bike, and run. The Mosquito Man was run, bike, run, bike, and run. (Three 1.5 mile runs and two 8.23 mile bike rides.) One other distinction this race had was their "team" race. It wasn't a traditional relay where different people do the different legs of the race. Their team event required 2 people to race the entire race together (they got to draft off each other on the bike), and the team's official finishing time was the second of the 2 teammates finishing time.

Make sure to check out the slideshow of images below, and on the second page of this article.

The winning team was only 11 seconds ahead of second, with the second place team closing on the final run. Eric Hendrickson and Brett Lovaas took the win in 1:08:50, and Brian Bich and Rhett Bonner were second in 1:09:01. The third place team was a M/F team of Chris Petree and Diane Hankee, and they finished in 1:16:54.

(There were actually 4 team divisions: M/M, M/F, F/F, and "Significant Other.")

In the female individual race, it should be no surprise to see Jenny Wilcox and Julie Hull at the top of the results. Wilcox took the top spot (and was 7th overall) in 1:17:37. Hull was less than 2 minutes behind, and was still in the top 10 overall. Jennifer Scudiero was the 3rd individual female, finishing in 1:24:36.

In the male individual race, the top spot went to Ross Weinzierl (1:09:15) who finished just a few seconds behind the top 2 teams! Second place went to Mario Minelli, who finished in 1:12:20. And just a few seconds behind him was Edwing Portil who took the third spot. Local "Masters" athlete Charlie Roach would have been in the mix for the top few spots, but he ended up 5th after taking a wrong turn on the second bike. [Yours truly snuck in as the #4 male ahead of "Wrong-Turn Roach".]
