China launches $600 car that will get 258 mpg
This $600 car is no toy and is ready to be released in China next year.
The single seater aero car totes VW (Volkswagen) branding.
Volkswagen did a lot of very highly protected testing of this car in Germany, but it was not announced until now where the car would make it's first appearance.
The car was introduced at the VW stockholders meeting as the most economical car in the world is presented.
The initial objective of the prototype was to prove that 1 liter of fuel could deliver 100 kilos of travel.

Spartan interior doesn't sacrifice safety
The aero design proved essential to getting the desired result. The body is 3.47 meters long and just 1.25 meters wide, and a little over a meter high. The prototype was made completely of carbon fiber and is not painted to save weight.
The power plant is a one cylinder diesel positioned ahead of the rear axle and combined with an automatic shift controlled by a knob in the interior.
Safety was not compromised as the impact and roll-over protection is comparable to the GT racing cars.

WOW!! This caught my eye right away. I have 3 children still at home and what a great way for me to get out alone...and save $$.
Great article...the car is awesome!
Well sorry for all of us in the US... You know it wont be allowed based solely it would put a lot of car companies out of business... Remember the government is about business... Not individual desires.. Would be nice though.. I would for sure buy one
who cares about the car companies going out of business,, they will develop one too and they will finally be a car war,,, now this could be phoney for the stockholders to get money too.. thats the name of that tune ..
WOW! I would Love to own one of those babies!!!
We need to import these to the US! Talk about sticking it to the gas moguls. Maybe the middle class can finally get a leg up!
Can this car be bought and used in the US?
I will buy this car and pay any associated fees to get it legal in the US. It'll still be cheaper than a car bought here. Really though, if there is almost any way to have a car at this price...why shouldn't we get one?

Where can I get one. This is awesome.
I will take 2 please!!
Widen the seat and you can have a 3-seater with the one in the middle driving it. It's a comfortable 16" wide for each passenger.
oh wow. I'll definitely be getting one of these. Gas to college would be so much easier to pay for.
Ridiculous. $600 for a car that gets 258 miles/gallon? Get the facts straight please and report back.
Well, still though, in some parts of the world, people can be making about $2.00 per week or so, especially in many third world countries. Since it is going to be sold in China, it would not be hard to believe that it would only cost $600... This is probably as basic as you could possibly imagine a car being...it doesn't even have paint!
i ordered a red one went to the dock to pick it up, they must be color blind it was blue so i refused delivery now i want my money back looking for a chinese interpreter to straighten this mess out please leave message at china boat resturant maui hawaii ask for long dong yee
@Cheryl Phillips: You aren't the first woman with that response. :)
@John Doss: unless you live in China, or outside the U.S. and will pay to import it, you can't. :(
@Andrea: The U.S. is just so far behind the world because our gas is too cheap.
@integrity vw: facts are correct. You sell VW's in the US? You want to respond in the story? Contact me markleevan@gmail.com
Will these cars be offered in the U.S. in coming years?
No info on horsepower, how much it weighs, acceleration, etc. Must be ridiculous!!!
It will be a nuisance in the real world.

That car looks more of a death trap than my 85 Pontiac Fiero. 258 mpg though, nice.
This is a note from CAR regarding the final price:
Pricing is expected to fall somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 ($31,400 to $47,100). Assembly is tipped to take place in VW's prototype shop, which can produce 1,000 cars per year at full tilt, reports CAR.
@Alfredo: one of us is going to be right. I predict it will be me. (or at least I'll be closer - $30,000 to make this tiny little plastic car?)
I wonder if the government will jack the price up for u.s. customers?
You bet the government. will up the price. Taxes will exceed $600!!!!!
I own a scooter in South Florida it's great to have! It's a larger scooter and can go highway speeds. This would be good for rainy days and the price is great! I hope it comes the USA for $600 but I can't help but feel I'm dreaming!
VW has been putting death traps on the road for years, this just seems to be a better one, should have a huge mortality rate. I'd like to see one parked next to a mid-size SUV.
"VW has been putting death traps on the road for years"
Citation needed for this spurious claim.
madsmoker, I don't understand what you mean by saying VW has been putting death traps on the road for years, their cars continuously get exceptional safety ratings.
Wow, VW has a good idea, the funny and the model behind the aerodynamic model as a small sports car with a price of $ 600 may be purchased by most people, as the name Volkswagen is the car people, the price can be bought by people with a highly efficient gasoline, so suitable for high oil prices today.
For the 2nd generation should think again by VW is more appropriate if only for 2 people and a place of goods, would be sweeter if you sit together.
And very suitable for Asian, I really liked it.
Hopefully succes
Americans will no doubt hot rod them. Drop more powerful engines in them, say.... like a Huyabusa engine. Then the car will still get 60 MPG but go 160 MPH.
How is the fiero a death trap? It had the higher safety rating in it's class. And though I imagine it has happened I personally have not heard of a single injury or death in a a fiero
Not quite true! Check out truth or fiction Website. The car will cost $25,000+ IF it hits the market.
What a piece of junk!
Yeah! What a great car! I'm thinking about trading in my four Huskys and my skateboard for this awesome vehicle!
If the car price is $600 ,and it gives 1gallon is 258 miles .Then deffinately i will take 2 cars to my children.
I AM IN INDIA AT HYDERABAD HOW CAN I GET TWO CARS.PLEASE CLARIFY MY DOUBTS.THANQ.
what a nice way to go
The only way you're going to get this car for $600 is with a full government subsidy. Think about it. You can't buy a riding lawnmower for $600. Does anyone really believe you're going to buy a carbon fiber vehicle for that little? The canopy ALONE cost way over that. Ask any aircraft homebuilder. The sum of just parts is a whole lot more than the price of the car.
I'll believe it when I see it.
This is the apex of economy of scale. I build airplanes, THIS is totally diffrent, because its not a "short run" production. There is a diffrence between a couple hundred (best)a year vs. 5 - 10,000 a year. The Germans are not "cheap" in their engineering, never have been. I'd like to see what a two seater, two cylinder would do with this effeciency in the general technology. THAT would sell well in America, and "cheap" at 3X the current asking price. But don't worry, if our "government" gets involved, you'll be lucky to be able to get one for less than $10,000!!!
yes, when the government gets involved they make an oxymoron out of "free enterprise". IF THEY CAN'T GAIN PERSONALLY IT AIN'T HAPPENING!!!
It will be blocked somehow, perhaps with regulations that demand lights a certain distance from the ground or such. The price will be forced above the cost of a far less efficient electric car because the big three automakers are "too big to fail".
Yeah, If our "Government" gets involved that will suck. Living in a democracy is terrible isn't it? This big government by the people and for the people should be gotten rid of, a nice small autocracy would be just great. Or perhaps a more fair and just model of governance like in China.
Have you ever heard the sound a car makes as it rolls over a small animal?.......Thump thump. That is the last sound the driver of this car will hear as the trailer truck rolls on.
Sorry but .. that's funny! although, I love this car.. I would buy one today! thump thump and all.
I'm guessing there's no A/C since that would kill gas mileage so with the sun burning in through that bubble top this car will not sell very well in warm climates. Also, it's not made to go in snow so it's not going to sell too well in cold climates.
How can I put in an order for one and have it shipped to the States
hOW CAN I BUY ONE FOR 600 DOLARS
I live in Saskatchewan, hot summers and cold winters, and I don't care if it won't go in the snow or if it has no AC. If I only use it to comute to work in the summer I will be saving a pile of fuel. As consumers in North America we are brutally wasteful. Be brave and make a difference. I will take one ASAP.
America will probably find it unsafe because of the 5mph crash test. I hope I'm wrong. We will see.
