Volkswagen's $600 car gets 258 mpg

China launches $600 car that will get 258 mpg

This $600 car is no toy and is ready to be released in China next year.

The single seater aero car totes VW (Volkswagen) branding.

Volkswagen did a lot of very highly protected testing of this car in Germany, but it was not announced until now where the car would make it's first appearance.

The car was introduced at the VW stockholders meeting as the most economical car in the world is presented.

The initial objective of the prototype was to prove that 1 liter of fuel could deliver 100 kilos of travel.

 Spartan interior doesn't sacrifice safety

The aero design proved essential to getting the desired result. The body is 3.47 meters long and just 1.25 meters wide, and a little over a meter high. The prototype was made completely of carbon fiber and is not painted to save weight.

The power plant is a one cylinder diesel positioned ahead of the rear axle and combined with an automatic shift controlled by a knob in the interior.

Safety was not compromised as the impact and roll-over protection is comparable to the GT racing cars.

Well sorry for all of us in the US... You know it wont be allowed based solely it would put a lot of car companies out of business... Remember the government is about business... Not individual desires.. Would be nice though.. I would for sure buy one

I will buy this car and pay any associated fees to get it legal in the US. It'll still be cheaper than a car bought here. Really though, if there is almost any way to have a car at this price...why shouldn't we get one?

Widen the seat and you can have a 3-seater with the one in the middle driving it. It's a comfortable 16" wide for each passenger.

Well, still though, in some parts of the world, people can be making about $2.00 per week or so, especially in many third world countries. Since it is going to be sold in China, it would not be hard to believe that it would only cost $600... This is probably as basic as you could possibly imagine a car being...it doesn't even have paint!

This is a note from CAR regarding the final price:
Pricing is expected to fall somewhere between €20,000 and €30,000 ($31,400 to $47,100). Assembly is tipped to take place in VW's prototype shop, which can produce 1,000 cars per year at full tilt, reports CAR.

VW has been putting death traps on the road for years, this just seems to be a better one, should have a huge mortality rate. I'd like to see one parked next to a mid-size SUV.

madsmoker, I don't understand what you mean by saying VW has been putting death traps on the road for years, their cars continuously get exceptional safety ratings.

Wow, VW has a good idea, the funny and the model behind the aerodynamic model as a small sports car with a price of $ 600 may be purchased by most people, as the name Volkswagen is the car people, the price can be bought by people with a highly efficient gasoline, so suitable for high oil prices today.
For the 2nd generation should think again by VW is more appropriate if only for 2 people and a place of goods, would be sweeter if you sit together.
And very suitable for Asian, I really liked it.
    Hopefully succes

Americans will no doubt hot rod them. Drop more powerful engines in them, say.... like a Huyabusa engine. Then the car will still get 60 MPG but go 160 MPH.

The only way you're going to get this car for $600 is with a full government subsidy. Think about it. You can't buy a riding lawnmower for $600. Does anyone really believe you're going to buy a carbon fiber vehicle for that little? The canopy ALONE cost way over that. Ask any aircraft homebuilder. The sum of just parts is a whole lot more than the price of the car.

This is the apex of economy of scale. I build airplanes, THIS is totally diffrent, because its not a "short run" production. There is a diffrence between a couple hundred (best)a year vs. 5 - 10,000 a year. The Germans are not "cheap" in their engineering, never have been. I'd like to see what a two seater, two cylinder would do with this effeciency in the general technology. THAT would sell well in America, and "cheap" at 3X the current asking price. But don't worry, if our "government" gets involved, you'll be lucky to be able to get one for less than $10,000!!!

  • kashmapouf 9 months ago

yes, when the government gets involved they make an oxymoron out of "free enterprise". IF THEY CAN'T GAIN PERSONALLY IT AIN'T HAPPENING!!!

  • Kubulai 8 months ago

It will be blocked somehow, perhaps with regulations that demand lights a certain distance from the ground or such. The price will be forced above the cost of a far less efficient electric car because the big three automakers are "too big to fail".

  • Dogger 8 months ago
    Report Abuse

Yeah, If our "Government" gets involved that will suck. Living in a democracy is terrible isn't it? This big government by the people and for the people should be gotten rid of, a nice small autocracy would be just great. Or perhaps a more fair and just model of governance like in China.

I'm guessing there's no A/C since that would kill gas mileage so with the sun burning in through that bubble top this car will not sell very well in warm climates. Also, it's not made to go in snow so it's not going to sell too well in cold climates.

I live in Saskatchewan, hot summers and cold winters, and I don't care if it won't go in the snow or if it has no AC. If I only use it to comute to work in the summer I will be saving a pile of fuel. As consumers in North America we are brutally wasteful. Be brave and make a difference. I will take one ASAP.

America will probably find it unsafe because of the 5mph crash test. I hope I'm wrong. We will see.
