A New York man accused of vandalizing billboards with permanent marker has been captured this week.
Joseph Patrick Waldo,26, had allegedly begun his crime spree of writing the word "MOUSTACHE" on billboards around New York City; a series of graffiti dating back to March 10, reports WABC.
Waldo was interviewed a few months back by subwayartblog.com, a website dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the various subway art that has inspired people for years. During the interview, Waldo joked about all of the names that he has taken on for his “moustache” tags.
“I think you’re the one who called me Moustache Madcap—that’s a good one. I like Moustache Bandit, too. Some people just refer to me as “Moustache.” I don’t quite get that one. One guy on twitter gave me the name “NYU Douchebag.” Maybe that one will stick. Officially I’m just Moustache Man.”
Well, Moustache Man is no more moustached than Doogie Howser was, at best sporting a 5 o’clock shadow. He was arrested at Eighth Ave. and 47th St, and according to news reports admitted to at least one of the cursive assaults on the subway billboards.
"I'm sorry for my actions and have agreed to fully cooperate and never do it again,"regretfully said Waldo.
He is being charged with felony criminal mischief, misdemeanor criminal mischief, making graffiti and possession of graffiti instrument (a permanent marker).
“At its simplest level, it's a quick joke meant to give commuters something to smile about while they're waiting for the subway, coming off from a long day at work, or getting stabbed on the D train.,” explained Waldo in an interview.
According to reports, police officers spent two months monitoring Waldo’s cursive crimes, whose damage cost an estimated $1,500.
