Redskins owner Dan Snyder made mistakes but media, fans should stop piling on

It’s time for members of the D.C. sports media and fans to stop piling on Redskins owner Daniel Snyder just because he’s an easy target.  Snyder hasn’t been a great owner over the last decade-plus, and in fact he has made some of the same mistakes over and over by signing free agents who didn’t work out.  Some of his marketing tactics have been questionable, and it turns out that Snyder may not be the nicest guy in the world.  Oh, and the organization has been dysfunctional without much continuity.  Ok, we get it.  How many more ways can this be said?

Sports writers, bloggers, sports radio “personalities” and fans need to get a life and think of something new to complain about.  Bashing Snyder is uninteresting to read about and even more boring and unoriginal to listen to on the radio.  People whose full-time jobs involve covering sports should be able to come up with something more than Snyder-bashing.  How about some actual analysis of Redskins players, schemes, and specific ideas for improvement?

The latest anti-Snyder rants have been all about how Snyder should not have filed a defamation lawsuit against a writer from the Washington City Paper.  The lawsuit mentions articles going back to 2009, specifically an article written last fall that was highly critical of the Redskins owner.

This column isn’t about the merits of the case, whether it was a smart public relations move, whether the scribbled-on photo of Snyder is anti-Semitic, or whether assertions in the article are accurate.  The writer makes some good points, but also lazily makes some assumptions to fit his point of view.

This column is about the fact that it is just so tedious and tiresome to constantly condemn Snyder.  Think of something new to write or talk about.  Please.  And if you’re going to criticize Snyder for all of the Redskins’ missteps, then he should get credit for the Redskins’ good moves as well.

Snyder brought back Joe Gibbs, which didn’t yield the expected results, but did anyone think this was not a great idea at the time?  The Redskins still made the playoffs two of the four years Gibbs 2.0 coached.  The hiring of Mike Shanahan hasn’t panned out as hoped yet, but it has only been one year, and it may ultimately work out.  If nothing else, the wacky Shanahan has been entertaining with his shenanigans

Under Snyder, the Redskins have drafted or acquired current standouts such as Lorenzo Alexander, Anthony Armstrong, Chris Cooley, London Fletcher, LaRon Landry, Santana Moss, Brian Orakpo, Mike Sellers, and Trent Williams.  Of those players, only Fletcher, Moss, and Sellers are past their primes, but even they should have at least one more good season.

And like it or not, the Redskins have been better under Snyder than they were during the previous six years from 1993 to 1998 when they failed to make the playoffs and had a record of 36-59 and a winning percentage of .379.  Under Snyder, Washington is 86-106 with a .448 record and three playoff appearances.  That’s not very good, but it’s inaccurate to say the Redskins were great and all of a sudden became terrible under Snyder.  Washington’s glory days lasted from 1982 to 1991 when the Redskins made it to four Super Bowls, winning three.  Within two seasons, the Redskins had started their worst six-year stretch since the 1960s.

As for the City Paper article, several of the items are reaches.

The writer criticizes Snyder for firing Marty Schottenheimer after an 8-8 season in 2001 during which he went 8-3 in his final 11 games.  Ignored is the fact that the Redskins started 0-5.  Those early games count just as much as the ones at the end of the season.  Anyone who remembers Schottenheimer’s typical play calls of a three-yard pass on third and eight would not be so quick to defend Marty.  It’s also easier to win games when a team is out of the playoffs.

Al Saunders’ 700-page playbook is criticized since “Gibbs’ comparatively simple offensive schemes revolutionized the game and brought the Redskins three Super Bowls.”  So Gibbs’ schemes were simple and that was the key to his success?  That’s an oversimplification.  If anything, Gibbs 2.0 was too conservative. Blaming Snyder for Gibbs’ lack of success during his second go around is too easy.  Maybe defensive coordinator Richie Petitbon deserved more credit for Washington’s success than he got.  Snyder actually went out of his way to hire excellent defensive coordinators such as Marvin Lewis, Gregg Williams, and Jim Haslett.

Snyder is criticized in the article because he said before the 2000 season he expected Norv Turner to coach the team “a long time.”  Snyder fired Turner with the team at 7-6.  But owners often publicly give coaches votes of confidence several months before firing them.  What else do you expect them to say?  The article fails to mention that Turner led the Redskins to the playoffs just once in seven seasons.  His firing was justified, although the timing was questionable.

The article brings up a conflict of interest as Snyder employs members of the D.C. media to work for the Redskins Broadcast Network, owned by the team.  Who else is supposed to work for this network?  In fact, every show on ESPN 980, owned by Snyder, is unapologetically and unabashedly critical of the Redskins owner.  So if anything, Snyder deserves credit for allowing ESPN 980 to knock him without fear of reprisal.

The article ridicules Snyder for hosting prospective coaches such as Steve Spagnuolo at his guest house in Potomac during job interviews.  So what?  That would seem to be a convenient thing to do.

The article goes on to accuse Snyder of allowing nepotism, “a plague that has run rampant at Redskins Park,” but when Schottenheimer was coach, his brother Kurt, the defensive coordinator, already had two years of experience as a defensive coordinator for Kansas City, and 14 years of NFL assistant coaching experience.  Marty’s son Brian, offensive coordinator for the Redskins in 2001, had assistant coaching experience with St. Louis and Kansas City, and with USC and Syracuse.

Mike Shanahan’s son Kyle is currently the Redskins’ offensive coordinator.  While the Shanahans' offense was a disaster last season, Kyle did run the Houston Texans’ prolific offense for two seasons before coming to Washington.  Should Snyder have meddled and told the coaches whom to hire?

The article rips Snyder for getting a “ringing endorsement” from Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen about Shanahan, implying that Bowlen gave the endorsement to save $7 million of money still on Shanahan’s Denver contract.  However, Shanahan would have gotten a head-coaching job somewhere anyway.  He was also offered the Buffalo job.

The article calls former Redskins interim coach Terry Robiskie a “Yes Man,” but many coaches would do what the owner says.  In Tennessee, Jeff Fisher played Vince Young at owner Bud Adams’ request.

Finally, the article criticizes Snyder for reportedly reneging on a deal previous owner Jack Kent Cooke made with Frostburg State University to have the Redskins hold training camp there.  But the university accepted a $750,000 settlement, and Snyder moved Redskins training camp to Ashburn, Virginia at Redskins Park, which was more accessible to fans, despite the fees.

The bottom line is that Snyder has made a lot of mistakes as Redskins owner.  But at least he spends money to try to win, and he also is active in philanthropy.  Snyder’s lawsuit states that any money won will be contributed to efforts to help the homeless, a fact rarely if ever mentioned by any members of the media.

So Snyder’s strategy to help the Redskins win has at times been incoherent, near-sighted, and even hapless.  So he hasn’t been the nicest guy along the way, according to numerous reports.  So the lawsuit may not be winnable, or worth the time, money, and negative publicity.  So Snyder signs too many free agents and fires too many coaches.  Blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada.

Snyder is an easy mark.  Now it’s: “Snyder’s decision to file a lawsuit is a bad public relations move” as everybody jumps on the anti-Snyder bandwagon.

So, to sports writers, sports radio chatterers, bloggers and fans:  enough is enough. It is unbelievably boring to say the same things over and over again.  If you have something new, let’s hear it.

But writing about what’s wrong with Snyder’s lawsuit or encouraging people to “chime in” on how they feel about Snyder ad nauseam gets old.  The criticism becomes as lackluster and mind-numbing as the parrots and sycophants who call in to sports radio to “hang up and listen to your answer,” or the readers who comment on articles and make profound statements such as “Snyder is a bad owner and a terrible guy.”

Maybe we should clap louder to Danny Boy's destruction of a once proud franchise. This article is a joke. People are piling on Dan Snyder because of his repugnant actions not because "he's an easy target". Dan Snyder has demonstrated that he is a horrible repugnant individual as well as a horrible incompetent owner. That's reality.

your an idiot, fans like you that think they know but in reality get ALL your information from news articles are pathetic. you let the media foem your opinion for you and then run with it like it was your thoughts all along. this article is well writen and points out how the media reports only what they want to report in order to get ratings and mindless people read these articles and take it as gods word. this once proud franchise you speak of was only popular under joe gibbs winning all he SB's and that was only because of fair weather fans like you jumping on board. jerry jones is way worse then DS and the cowboys are still winning over the years. relax and let DS run HIS team that you watch and stop being a fair weather fan and start supporting you team and owner like real fans do.

The Redskins were bad before Snyder, hiring Norv Turner was a big mistake. Letting both Gibbs era GM's get away was a mistake. People need to stop whinning like a pack of grunts. Dan will get it right soon, so go and become a cowboy lover and leave us Redskins alone.

I hear you Mike, but it isn't one particular thing or another. And by discussing the contents of the article in City Paper, I hate to say it, but you did make it an article about the lawsuit.

The point is that Skins fans are sick and tired of seeing more headlines about their owners bad decisions. No one questions that he is trying to make improvements, but at some point you accept that your moves and repeats of those moves are ill advised.

I was happier with the new Dan - who brought in people to manage the team so he can step back. Shanahan is still a good move. Maybe it pans out, maybe it doesn't. Fans supported it and he made it. But this lawsuit reeks of old Dan. That is the point. If you are a new Dan, move on as Chris Colley has said in his remarks about the lawsuit. Take your licks and focus forward.

I don't know the names of many if any owners. But everyone knows his because it is in the press all of the time for bad actiosn...more so than Haynesworth or any other problem child in the league. The media wouldn't mention him if he didn't have something people wanted to question (and you wouldn't write the article you just did) if it wasn't going to generate readership.

Snyder is the owner and i get that but his true failing is not hiring a true General manager and president of football operations before Gibbs 2.0. The lack of an over all plan and sticking with it is his undoing. You can not blame no one else for that but him and that is not piling on but a fact. Now you hire a coach that has a so so track record at best as a talent evaluator is just making the same mistake that has been made for over a decade. For once i wish Snyder would get that one right. I can live with the rest of his antics but the Gm issue he nneds to get and get now. Atlanta and miami along with KC did that and they have improved its time Snyder went out and hired a real GM not bruce allen who is really a cap guy to rebuild this team for the long term. Heck do what atlanta and KC did raid the patriots front office and rebuild with draft and hire a QB coach and stick with him for more than a year or two. Like wine building a football team takestime there are no quick fixes.

Mike - I honestly liked that you wrote the article you did. But the article no one has written, and the City paper offered him the chance to do was write a piece setting the record staright. Maybe the opposite of the City Paper article needs to be written, maybe even by Snyder, to show that his interests in trying to make good things happen are genuine and he will keep working to refine his role as owner to make that happen. Ackowledge the past mistkaes more formerly and committ to doing things to gain fan support. Offer free parking during training camp, or whatever - I don't know.

Offer something more than "I don't care what critics think." Give us a response - a rebuttal to the article. Not a lawsuit to try and kick the paper in the balls to teach the writer a lesson.

Explain in an article all of the wonderful things your wife is doing as a compliment to her and to show how shallow the writer's assessment was. Instead, he sued and gave the piece national splotlight for days on end.

Snyder needs to give his state of the Union kind of speech for the Redskins....and not in court.

I don't have time to ridicule all the ridiculous things in this article, so I'll just pick one:

"The writer criticizes Snyder for firing Marty Schottenheimer after an 8-8 season in 2001 during which he went 8-3 in his final 11 games. Ignored is the fact that the Redskins started 0-5. Those early games count just as much as the ones at the end of the season."

Um... do you know what Joe Gibbs's record was his first season here? 8-8. Do you know what his record was his final 11 games? 8-3. Do you know what his record was his first five games? 0-5.

In other words, Gibbs's first season record was identical to Marty's first season record. I know this was Gibbs's first head coaching gig and it was Marty's third. But -- if "those early games count just as much as the ones at the end of the season," by that logic, JKC should have fired Gibbs, too.

  • The '81 Skins showed a lot of promise, finishing 10th in the league in scoring while conservative Martyball finished 28th in scoring offense.  The '81 Skins made a two-game improvement from '80 while the '01 Skins stayed the same. I'm just saying it wasn't a no-brainer that Marty should have stayed.

As for Snyder in general, everyone is frustrated with the performance of the Redskins under Snyder.  The City Paper article rehashed mostly old news, though.

I will say this about Snyder -- though some believe he only cares about money, I believe he really wants to win and has been very proactive about it, even though he has often been impatient.

Still, I'd almost rather have that than another owner in town who is always praised because he's not Snyder, but is essentially trying to go for the best draft picks to build for the future.  (Translation - losing on purpose.  When you're not trying 100% you're losing on purpose, which defeats the whole idea of sports.) I believe that's a dangerous strategy because you might get lucky and get top picks, but you enable a culture of losing.

I support what you said there. I think he truly cares about the Redskins - I just want to see more of that. Sometimes you wonder. I think bringing in a GM and signing a no BS coach like Shanahan showed he was willing to take a backseat a bit and that was a strong move. I'd like to see him keep building up good will. I think the City Paper article read like a big rant and did give it much thought except a chuckle or two since it did just rehash old news. But Dan fed it Red Bull and gave it wings.

Why try and take the heat off Snyder? That's like saying stop bashing for Obama for all the turmoil he's put the nation through. If someone's a problem or they're doing a poor job, then that's that. You can't knock people for pointing out the obvious, especially if the same problems and let downs are resurfacing year in and year out . If he did his job, no one would criticize him. Problem is, us fans have not been getting the results we're owed. The Redskins have not lived up to expectations for way too long now. As for Snyder, he should try laying low for a while and bringing in some worthwhile talent. Suing a local newspaper isn't going to help. I read that article in the Examiner by the way so there's definitely a dichotomy you guys have to figure out. Are you pro or anti Snyder? Or maybe you just don't care. I dunno. Bottom line: we need results and we need them now. Take care of business and problem solved.

Maybe you dream Danny will help you get a nice little center for you to work with your autistic clients at how much per hour? You won't have to worry about them complaining if you feed them dangerously old peanuts and sell them beverages in the bathroom. How much will they have to pay you to park? For a crappy seat? What you don't address is that the things you think $nyder did that were good for the team were done at the fan's expense. What's going on is the fans are finally fed up with being treated with such contempt. Danny makes incredibly stupid decisions and wastes a ton of money - money he then comes after the fans for. Maybe the team needed to be rebuilt before $nyder took over but at least we, the fans, weren't being gouged at every possible turn and being made into fools ridiculed nationwide for the way we were being treated. $ynder is an abusive owner. His false statements about his wife's cancer and the "anti-semetic" drawing shows without any question he's also a liar. As fans we've had enough. Its a chronic character issue. The world is constantly settling for mediocrity, a lack of ethics, and a lack of responsibility and accountability. Snyder, to many, represents all those things rolled into one.

The ridiculous, me first, lawsuit just puts even more icing on that bad tasting cake. What about thinking about the fans, the team, the city first for once? People would rather be talking about class, integrity, ethics, and respect with regard to the Redskins but that is hardly possible under these conditions.

Sure, a lot of the criticism directed at Snyder may be repetitive, possibly even boring, but I'll tell you what else is too - the total and consistent disregard Snyder shows to the fan base who shell out enormous sums of money for a lousy game experience (to say nothing of the losing). Redskins fans deserve better, and until Snyder gets that, everyone should be reminded just how bad he's been for this franchise.

Let me just say I love Dan Snyder's record while owning the Redskins. No, I'm serious. I believe I share this opinion with the other Cowboys fans worldwide.

  • Thanks for your comments. I acknowledge that Snyder hasn’t been the best owner and has made a lot of mistakes but my point is that most of the items listed in the City Paper article, though many of them are legitimate, are old news, and some of them were exaggerated. However, I admit the article was also well written and even a little funny at times.

I understand the passion and frustration of the fans. It’s tough to see the Redskins, who were so great in the 1970s, ‘80s, and early ‘90s not only lose but be considered a laughingstock after the great eras of the past when players put the team first. But the same old anti-Snyder criticism over and over by sports radio hosts and others gets old after a while.

Though last year was a tough first year for Shanahan and the Redskins and a lot of mistakes were made, the culture may be changing for the better with more discipline.

What’s done is done and Snyder might be well served to do more interviews to humanize himself more. One thing you can say about Snyder is he’s trying to win.

As for not having any sports experience, I worked for Mutual/NBC radio and WTEM in the early 90s and also covered the Bullets, Caps, Orioles, and Redskins for other stations. I played on the tennis team in college and coached youth soccer and sports to kids with autism. I’m a journalist but I’m also a fan and I understand being critical, as you can see from recent articles I’ve done about the Wizards and Terps. Thanks for reading.

I pretty much agree with the article. Remember the carpet bagger from New York who was competition for purchasing the Skins? Had that happened we would have been unhappy. My thought is Snyder's biggest mistake was hiring, and then keeping, Cerrato around. Wonder why that happened? It does not fit Snyder's m.o. to keep someone as inept as Vinny around. Racquetball buddies, fine, but not running the team. And, yes, he has made mistakes but he did just fine in business so he should learn. Is he the awful person portrayed? I don't know since I haven't met him. I suspect he can be irritating and rude but then can many others; and I hope a bit more age will smooth some of that roughness. I have been a Skins' fan since 1948 and have seen many a season much worse than those under Snyder. I also would rather read articles of 2011 potential, new and departing players, needs, etc. than a Snyder rehash. I realize most won't agree or think it possible, but I hope Snyder develops into a good NFL owner, cognizant of the Skins' history and place in the community.

"It’s also easier to win games when a team is out of the playoffs."
I think this assumption is way off base. Where are the stats to prove this? I think it is just as easy for a coach to lose the players in a season that starts 0-5. Marty should be commended for coming back and winning 8 of the next 11. Every week in the NFL is a grind and if anything being able to pull a team together after a winless start is more difficult than motivating a team in the playoff hunt.

You are absolutely right. Dan Snyder is the BEST owner ever. The Redskins record of success on the field and the warmth that the average fan feels in his/her heart for him speaks for itself. Mr Snyder is just protecting himself against naysayers who mistakenly say he is so greedy that he would sue a 40 year customer, down on her luck from the recession - that could NOT be true. This Snyder bashing MUST stop - or else he will never bring a Super Bowl to DC the way his role model, Jerry Jones did for Dallas this very year. I for one am proud to be a fan of the most profitable franchise in the NFL. Now that he has weeded out malingerers like Santana Moss, he will be free to bring us more All-Pro leaders like Albert Haynesworth, and more Hall of Famers like Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith. His record speaks for itself.

Sir, you stated toward the end of your column that "enough is enough", but that flows both ways. For ten years we as fans have dealt with a small petty man who treats a pro team like a toy, except he uses his toy to extort the fans of his fans history. He holds press conferences with the Skins' three Lombardi trophies prominently displayed, which he had no part in earning. Cooke as an owner made mistakes, as all owners do, but what Snyder's ten years have shown us is that the owner of a beloved franchise is a petty, small, and pathetic little man lacking in character who thinks his money entitles him respect.

One thing further. Snyder lives in Montgomery County MD, an area with a relatively high Jewish population, including a thriving Orthodox community in Silver Spring, and he had to go to LA to find a rabbi to say the drawing was anti-Semitic? Infer the conclusion yourself.

Snyder's tenure has had its ups and plenty of downs. As fans who expect more its easy to focus on the downs and thats understandable, i do the same thing. Making the playoffs once every 3-4 years isint enough for me. One win or no wins when they do make it isint enough for me. But clearly is isint enough for snyder either. Through all the mistakes and all the meddling he has always tried to put a winner on the field, sparing no expense. He's not afraid to take a shot, and probability would indicate that if he takes enough shots, eventually one will hit. There are probably not many people who have been more critical of than i have reguarding some of his decisions but it could be worse. Just be glad you arent a raiders fan.

Al Davis may not be a savory character, but his history in making the NFL respect and eventually merge with the AFL, then winning some Super Bowls. And they've been to the promised land in the last ten years, AND they took our former qb and he did well out there. I'd rather have Al's history, and his current loonieness than Snyder's pathetic ownership any day.

The Redskins will never win a super bowl with Snyder as the owner, plain and simple.

I would love not to say a bad word about Dan Snyder ever again but he tries VERY HARD time after time to remind us how bad his judgment and his public relations are, let alone how awful an owner he has been. It has been torture to be a Skins fan under his ownership.

Mike.....Thank you for your column. This needed to have been written several months, if not maybe early last year. Bottom line, if this team were winning games....none of the negatives get mentioned....Jack Kent Cooke had personal character issues when he was Skins owner, but no one heard anything about it because the team was WINNING.....The media has gone overboard to the point of unprofessionalism (i.e. Brett Haber), and the fellow Skins fans have been acting like brats....We are a joke to other fans....time to stop whining get behind the team and stop complaining. Or go become a Cincinnati Bengals fan!......Again, Thank You.

When you see pro-Snyder posts in this thread, please remember:

The fundamental reasons for the outright failure by the Redskins have been the actions by Daniel Snyder over the last decade. He is just an awful owner with terrible personality problems.
