Surfers Healing will be providing a one-day surf camp for children with autism at Narragansett Beach in Rhode Island on September 17, 2011. Surfers Healing is an organization that was founded by Israel ("Izzy") and Danielle Paskowitz.
Izzy Paskowitz is a surfing champion. He has competed in and won dozens of longboard titles, including the 1988 Hang Ten World Championship. At the height of his competitive surfing career he had numerous sponsors. He has modeled for many Nike ads and many other surfwear brands.
Izzy and Danielle Paskowit's son, Isaiah, was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. Like many children with autism, Isaiah often suffered from sensory overload. Izzy would take Isaiah out on his surfboard, tandem surfing. He noticed that it would calm Isaiah. What surfing did for Isaiah inspired Danielle and Izzy to form the Surfers Healing organization.
A typical day at surf camp begins with check in, fitting the children with life vests and wet suits. Parents are asked to stay on the beach and let the volunteers work with the children. Surf camps fill quickly, in less than 24 hours when online registration opens. New surf camp registrations are given first priority.
