Twitter abbreviations: don't overuse them
When you start using Twitter, squeezing your thoughts into 140 characters is a challenge. Unless you've perfected the art of text messaging, it's likely that you have no idea what all of the abbreviations mean that are constantly in use on Twitter.
Using an abbreviation is a great way to free up some space when you tweet, but it is very important not to use so many that your tweet looks like a secret code. It is also not a great idea to use abbreviations that aren't universally knowns -- your tweet might be important but most people do not have time to de-code what you are saying.
Here are some of the abbreviations used most frequently on Twitter:
RT – Re tweeting/forwarding the original tweet.
DM – Direct Message. This is a private message that does not show in the public time line.
LOL - Laugh(ing) out loud
IMHO – In My Humble Opinion
WTH – What the Hell...or 'heck' if you think people believe that's what you mean
BTW – By the way
IRL – In Real Life
FTF – Face to Face
ASAP – As Soon As Possible
JV – Joint Venture
LMK – Let Me Know
J/K – Joking or Just Kidding
FB - Facebook
OH - Overheard
FTL - For the Loss
FTW - For the Win
TTYL - Talk to you later
TY - Thank you
YW - You're welcome
TMI - Too much information
Every day, there seem to be new abbreviations that pop up on Twitter. Use them sparingly and make sure you are getting your point across.

Thanks. I don't text so I always try to actually type out the words, unless I don't have room. That 140 limit sometimes is a challenge. I am going to pass this on to many of my friends that are new to Twitter and don't text.
This is a helpful guide to ABBREVIATIONS, not to acronyms. They aren't the same thing. An acronym is an abbreviation that is pronounced as a word, like scuba (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) or radar (radio detecting and ranging) or nylon (New York and London).
There is also F2F (face to face) and FML (F--- my life). I've never encountered JV.
Some more to add:
w/ - with
s/o - someone
NP - No Problem
And of course using homonyms:
2 = to or too
4 = for
8 = gr8 (great) or ate
And so on ;). Thanks for this!
NSFW = not safe for work
Actually, only one of these is an acronym. They are actually initializations. Acronyms are words that stand for something...
YT = You Tube
It's easier to type the whole word even if a bit long ...nobody misinterprets meaning although full stops commas' & semi-colons always omitted,meanings misinterpreted all the time - a confusing way to communiacte. but so long as people enjoy it - that's what matters !!
Most of these are abbreviations that were commonly used in texting, chatting & IMing prior to the existence of Twitter. Still, I'm sure this list is helpful to some.
