Sleeping habits of rabbits

                         Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Sometimes you just have to let sleeping rabbits lie.....

                                  Must...have...coffee

On these long, busy late summer days, a bunny just gets tired. A full day of heavy binkies can tucker out even the most energetic of rabbits. What can they do? Being the health conscious sort (all those veggies, the high fiber diets they're on) they are not prone to imbibing energy drinks, although some male bunnies have been known to visit Starbucks (Get it? StarBUCKS?).

                              This can't be comfortable

Sometimes, a good nap is the only thing that will help. As you can see here, these bunnies are making the most of naptime. Nothing short of a forced evacuation is going to get this bunch to move (and even then, you’ll have to carry them).

                     Dozing with a friend...

Rabbits sleep in many ways – eyes open, eyes closed, meatloaf crouch, dead-bunny flop. Some rabbits will sit up and try to stay awake, while their head nods and bobs…others just fall over and pass out. Some rabbits sleep in a quiet crouch, eyes open, while others sleep so soundly their mouth moves, or they lick their lips, or their eyelids twitch (a.k.a. Rabbit Eye Movement).

                         ...or just passed out

Wild rabbits are supposed to be 'crepuscular', meaning they are awake in the hours just before dawn and after dusk, and doze and/or sleep during the day and late at night. This lessens the likelihood of being eaten. Many domestic rabbits take on the same habits, but others will take on the habits of their owners. If the owners are around from 6PM to bedtime, that's when the rabbit is awake and active. If the owners are around all day, the rabbits will sleep at night (with maybe a wee nap in the afternoon.  Drooling optional).

I frequently think one of my bunnies is dead when she's asleep. I bend down to watch for her breathing.

Lucy, rabbits in the wild mostly doze during the day, hidden away so nothing eats them. They are generally not sound sleepers because of this. Domestic rabbits tend to sleep when their owners are not around, so as not to miss out on any of the action. Probably pet bunnies sleep 6-8 hours a day but this is a guess, and it varies according to the rabbit and its age.
