In his mindblowingly brilliant work A Brief History of Time the eminent physicist wrote of physics allowing us to know "the mind of God."

Despite this and other oft-quoted choices of language, in June of this year Hawking came out with his personal views on the matter. In an interview he told Diane Sawyer he believed that "there is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, [and] science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works."

Since then he has fallen out of favor with the science proves god crowd and with the revelations promised in his newest book The Grand Design (Due out Sept 7th). According to reports Hawking is quoted as reporting that “Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing [...] Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist."

Ouch. Strong words from the worlds most brilliant mind. But do they hold water?

Head over to OaklandSkeptic.com for a longer discussion on the subject and add your two cents. What do you make of this claim? Can science really disprove the need for a "creator"?
