The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the young victim attended church and wanted to be a police scout but at the same time "worried counselors by trying too hard to please the school's bad boys."
As the girl left a homecoming dance at Richmond High School on Saturday, October, 24, at about 9:30 p.m., she accepted an invitation by a group of young men to hang out in a darkened courtyard. The group was a mixture of bad boys, bad boy wannabes, and hardened grown up bad boys who had aged out out of school, the paper reports.
As many as 10 young men and boys participated in the rape while another 20 looked on, the Chronicle reports. After the girl became drunk on brandy, they proposed sex but she said no. But the young men placed her on one of the two red cement benches in the courtyard and said they were going to have sex with her anyway. The beating and gang rape followed after the girl tried to kick one of the men in the groin. The attack lasted 2 1/2 hours.

Richmond Police continue to work around the clock rounding up more suspects. Late on Thursday afternoon, October 29, police took another suspect into custody. With the release of Salvador Rodriguez, five suspects will remain in jail for the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl on Saturday, October 24.

I was reading about the development of empathy in children-- the lack of empathy shown to the victim of this crime by those who witnessed it is shocking. Research shows that children whose parents are extremely emotionally stressed develop an ability to block their feelings at an early age. I wonder, at age 3, 4, 5, if the witnesses of this crime failed to develop empathy because of stressful family situations?

"Hate Crime" agree with you I live on the east coast and I had to search the internet for days to find out the race of the victim. If the victim would have been hispanic or black and the rapists white this would have been given non-stop coverage nation-wide 24/7 daily. It's just like the Christian/Newsom murders or the Wichita Massacre neither which garnered much more than scant coverage and neither one was deemed a hate crime.

It may sound brutal, but I cant help but feel if we adopted more of an eye for an eye attitude when punishing criminals of this nature, it might scare them bad enough to not want to repeat and even prevent some from the initial crime. Hold some public punishments and let society watch the outcome of their actions. Give the girl and her family members 2 1/2 hours to brutalize each of those pieces of crap. See if they survive it. Let them experience it all firsthand. Public punishment and executions would go a long way in deterring crime in the usa. There is no fear of the justice system here.

Give the right circumstances as what happened in this situation, men will fall into mob mentality and behavior. The men were showing off for each other by raping and beating the victim. It was an extreme macho performance by all. It wasn't about her, is was about them. It is on par with the mentality that makes dog fighting so popular among men. Justice must prevail and the victim and the community can begin to heal once the perpetrators are in prison. Furthermore, the victim has a right to drink brandy and get drunk, that is her right. Sadly, I'm not surprised by some of the ignorant comments here. It's a lot easier to blame the victim for inviting this type of crime than to accept that there are people in this world who are simply rotten to the core. Whether it happened as a result of a damaged family unit, being abused themselves, or just desensitization as a result of growing up in the midst of violence, the fact is that the young men who committed this crime are broken people lacking emotional maturity and are very likely sociopathic individuals. The young woman was treated like an animal and that not one of the 20+ people who observed/participated made an attempt to stop the horrible dehumanization of this girl is very telling of a society that will totally implode without immediate attention. The community needs help, and it needs help now.
First of all, she's guilty of one thing, underage drinking. And I know that she wasn't asking for rape, because I've been in her position, only I was picking up a friend who was drunk, and someone hit me in the head, and so on and so forth. So, just because she was drunk, does NOT mean that it is her fault, if she was intoxicated, then she probably couldn't have put of much of a fight, which means that they should go to jail for rape, and crimes of which they have done, and she should get sent off as well, for the drinking, and consumption on school property.
There are alot of young women who drink underage. There are also a lot of young women who are trying to find where they fit in and feel accepted and hang out with the "wrong crowd". Is it her fault she had no family? No, none of this is her fault. Yes she should have made better choices, but shes not an adult, in the eyes of the law she is still a child. These men/boys deserve to rot in jail, as do the twenty onlookers. What the hell is wrong with people that they would act as though this was a show and not step in to help? People in this world are sick, and that includes the people claiming she had it coming to her. You must not have a young daughter of your own or you wouldnt made such an ignorant comment.

WE just have to see the fact that issues like this bring out the worst in everyone. I know several women that have been raped in their teens or earlier. They are all white and the perps are all black. The reason I know of these occurrences is because I have been or currently am intimate with the victim. It is hard for me to be objective in these situations.
Disturbing comments. The victim was a 15 year old girl. It disturbs me that people can comment that it's her fault for putting herself in the situation.
We live in a grossly ill society, and we are a grossly ill people. I cannot even imagine what this incident will do to this young woman's life. But, of course, what the hell was she thinking?

I can believe theis. They say that Richmond High is a school with good kids and whatnot. I went there. That is not a very good school especially for white people.
